I thought Taylor went out a bit early, as morgie stated he'd just hit the 334 and found his mojo again. A lot of his batting peers went playing way past his retirement age of 34. Felt like that generation all lasted til at least 36-37 other than him and Healy, though Healy was forced out for Gilly

Taylor was pretty lean in the Ashes which followed the 334 series. I feel like his perma dropping from the ODI side might have brought his test retirement forward in the sense he had some pretty set ideas about the leadership of the side.

It was the first time there was a separation of captaincy between formats and I don't think it sat well with him, which is in keeping with his backward, selfish, ****-like views as a Howard-loving sychophantic Tory arse wipe.

Taylor retired because he was at risk of dying if he continued to play professional sport because of a heart condition IIRC.

Yes, except for Taibu who retired for religious reasons, it was unfortunate medical reasons for all the other 3. There is also an Indian movie with a similar storyline to that of James Taylor named 'Jersey'.

Kim Hughes retired at 30 in 1984 after pretty relentless and tasteless bullying by teammates. Was put into difficult situations by GChappell's choosing of when he'd tour or not, and then losing and regaining the captaincy based on Chappell's whims. Should never had been put into the situations he was. Should have never been fettered with the captaincy

A lot of those big names retired that same year and it's a shame that he couldn't push on and have the team become his own. Obviously AB became one of our great leaders but Hughes was a very talented batsman who showed what he was made of in innings against WIs pacemen. And he was a lot more talented than guys like Hilditch, Hookes, Ritchie and Phillips who played in the couple of lean years following Lillee, Marsh and Chappell's retirements.

Mark Richardson was only 32 when he retired. Averaging 45 and had just come off a tour of England where he made 350 runs against Flintoff, Harmison, Jones and Hoggard. Apparently he was totally burnt out at the end, but can't help but think he could've taken a couple of months out of the side to mentally refresh and go again.

Crowe another who retired at 32. Obviously his knees were buggered, but he wanted to retire from ODI's (where the quick singles were obviously becoming an issue) and continue playing tests. Glenn Turner told him no, he was either fit to play all formats or none of them, and so Crowe walked away.

AB DeVilliers is the one player I can remember who retired at the complete top of his game. He had just played two home series against quality attacks of India and Australia and was the difference between the two sides. His last series he was spanking Hazelwood and Cummins around.

He easily could have played a couple of more years and frankly SA would have needed him.

De Villiers was the most selfish one. He went on a hiatus when his team needed him most as soon as his form dipped and left them in the dust before retiring too.

That average don't look so pretty otherwise.

Sanga is not a terrible shout, but he was getting absolutely owned by Ashwin in that 15 series before he retired. Was semi-comical at times.
