Southee was legit good with the new ball in pretty much every innings so far, but hasn't been as threatening as Boult before dropping off harder with the old ball. He's got Root out early and had drops off his bowling so tbh his figures are worse than his contribution

If NZ still had Jamieson and de Grandhomme and so had proper options after he loses that new ball edge in these tests he'd be a lot more viable. As he's been playing, he makes playing a 3.5 man attack even worse

Bad luck to Overton, but I have to say as an NZ fan that was one of the most frustrating innings to watch that I’ve ever seen. Every second or third ball it seemed like he was playing and missing or getting a thick edge into a gap.

One of the reasons why it was always a bad idea to bat him below tailenders, even after he stopped taking batting seriously. Having a slogger at #9 makes sense because you've still got two wickets to chuck around

Boult does seem to have lifted his game this series. At one point he looked on track to get more test wickets than Southee, but in the last couple of years Southee has pulled well ahead of him.

In a situation like this it makes sense to send out Broad. He can smack it a long way and we could be close to 400 at lunch if they bat a while.

They are fine. Not as ***y as the ones these guys play with hard hands on the up. But then again, its why they are scoring so many more runs.

Boult being our best LO bowler (+ Ferguson) ... he should be a better bet against a tailender or Bazball attack than any of Southee, Jamieson, Henry and Wagner.
