*Official* 2022 New Zealand Tour of England, Ireland, Scotland & Netherlands

Days of Grace

International Captain
This is more like a tour to Australia where everything that can go wrong will go wrong.

I can't believe I went to bed at tea thinking it was inevitable that England would win. I thought to myself before I watched the final session back, "England will win by 5 wickets." I was wrong about them doing it in 50 ****ing overs.

Bairstow and Stokes were treating it like a T20. Where then were our T20 plans? Latham took way too long to change strategy and as was the case we only had one bowler on the day who could actually implement a T20 bowling plan.

When the opposition were threatening to get away, I used to think, "Nah, we'll be right. We've got Wagner." Now someone hits a couple of boundaries and it feels inevitable that they will get a hundred or the target will be chased down. This is in the course of 12 months.

The team have gone stale and Farmer Stead and the Postman have to go. Latham and Southee (for the umpteenth time in the latter's case) need to feel some jeopardy for their spots. Apart from that, we have the talent. They just need someone to remotivate them after the WTC win. I get the feeling for this group it was a huge relief to finally get over the line in Southampton and we have yet to rediscover the drive and energy required to push again for test wins.

Farmer Stead and Tommeh will have us believe that we came across someone playing the innings of their life and there was nothing we could do about it. Same thing happened last match. Same thing happened at Mount Maunganui except it was a bowler who up to that point averaged over 50. Either we are extremely unlucky or there is something very wrong with the mindset of this team.

I like JOverton's call up. He really seems to have something about him over the last couple of years.

Cricinfo reckons he'll play, who would England rest? Gut feeling is Broad, but nothing else to back that up!

McCullum has said no rotation. Don't know if Stokes is fit to bowl so maybe no Leach and J Overton in at 8.

On a separate note but still to do with this tour, are we going to be seeing Guptill and Nicholls opening the inning for us? As expected Stead was backing his selections and in fact mentioned the reason why Mitchell and Bracewell were doing so well is because they're 31 and have lot of domestic cricket experience. I'm expecting to see the entire one day squad with 30+ year olds this year till the wheels come off.

I don't have a problem with giving Guptill a good run and let him retire when he wants but Nicholls as an opener is so 2000s

Also I hear they have released Hamish Rutherford. Why? We have two players with covid and what if the covid takes a toll on one or both the players? Whom do we go to in the case? I think we're making dumber decision every passing day. Why didn't we keep Rutherford in the squad just in case?

I don't think there is any clause we had to keep the squad to 15. In any case either of Devon or Bracewell aren't available can't they open with Rutherford and play Latham at 4 or 5?

There’s now an article on Stuff regarding the struggles of Tom Latham against better opposition.

Is Black Caps opener Tom Latham world-class - or does he beat up lesser teams?

Well, he does have "some" success against India in India. Was good in UAE and Sri Lanka as well. Definitely not world class though. I feel like his ceiling against top teams in tough conditions is : See out the new ball, protect no.3 and 4. That's the best he can do I feel. And of course, if you wanna beat up SL and BD at Hagley, he's your man.

Hey, Latham's averages against the stronger teams (SA aside) are still at worst comparable to the career averages of most post-Strauss openers we've tried (or most specialist batsmen over the last few years really). You don't know how good you've got it ;)

Latham is a good batsman but he is not an NZ great as some media were claiming recently it’s really that simple.
I mean the homeland of Blair Pocock and Lawrie Miller can't be picky about someone who scores runs, even if it's only when conditions favour him.

Yeah, having a go at Latham is beating a dead horse. We all know he’s at best good in Asia and passable against top opposition. Regardless he’s still outperformed every opening partner he’s had over the past decade save Conway, so I’m not sure what the point of it is besides expressing frustration about him not kicking on like we all hoped he would.

I’d fully understand England giving one or both of Broaderson a breather for the 3rd test, but I really hope it doesn’t happen.

Because carrying >15 means digging into their own pockets, rather than what the host pays for.

Short arms, long pockets.

I want to play the devil's advocate here.... although the stats don't lie you can't just knock off the bowling of Pakistan or West Indies on our decks. Credit where it's due, Latham's runs against them is valuable still. I can understand Zimbabwe bowling not being the best at the moment but when Latham played and scored against Pakistan or West Indies or even Sri Lanka surely they had reasonable new ball bowlers. Every country's new ball bowlers will be among the highest paid and an international opener averaging 40 is very very good.

Besides I've not seen Latham get out to bowlers in a set pattern i.e. nicking off or LBW or consistently bowled. He seems to find so many different ways to get out.

I don't think any international runs can be discounted and segregated by saying runs vs only Aussies, England and Indians are good runs. Rather than lack of quality or ability, it could just be that some of the bowlers playing for these countries may have been in the best of the form or maybe Latham was too eager to score against them hence got out?

We criticise Latham because as fans we are allowed to want more than "better than 10 years ago" from entertainers earning top 1% in the country to entertain us. "Well at least he isn't game of thrones season 8!" wouldn't be much of a reference for any of us in our jobs.

Latham isn't a bad player by any means and is in fact very talented but he isn't within an openers arsehole of our all time side like advertised. Against anyone who isn't a Hawke Cup pace attack in SENA he is Martin Guptill.

Yeah, I don't think anyone is suggesting Latham should be dropped.

For me, it's just a massive frustration that he hasn't found a way to score runs against good opposition, when we need him the most. He has a strong technique, but he's mentally frail. And also pointing out that anyone who says he's one of NZ's best Test openers, as I've read before, he's just not that. He's below Wright, Richardson, Turner etc.

For me, it's the most frustrating that he never gets out the same way. Throughout a series, he'll get out 4-5 different ways. Same here. Caught 3rd slip off back foot force through cover, caught pulling a long hop to mid wicket, caught back foot defensive, bowled with an incredibly poor leave.

Openers for each of the domestic sides in red ball cricket

Canterbury - Bowes, McClure
Auckland - Worker, Beghin
Wellington - Rachin, Vishvaka/Georgeson
Otago - Rutherford, Renwick
CD - Hay/Smith
ND - Raval/Cooper

I think Latham is the best opener we have in the country. Young is not an opener either.

From the above list other than Rutherford and Rachin no one can come close. Maybe Cooper could have put his hand up a season or two ago but not anymore. Hay has been in good touch but debatable if he can be picked at the age he's at right now. Ideally Rachin should have been given a run as a batsman but there were no spots in the top order. It's quite a log jammed at the moment. That said one or two more series it is inevitable he'll be there hopefully opening and Young batting in the middle order. If Latham has to bat in the middle order then they we will need 2 new openers.

They could use Devon as a stop gap opener but again it won't do him any good.
