Days of Grace
International Captain
This is more like a tour to Australia where everything that can go wrong will go wrong.
I can't believe I went to bed at tea thinking it was inevitable that England would win. I thought to myself before I watched the final session back, "England will win by 5 wickets." I was wrong about them doing it in 50 ****ing overs.
Bairstow and Stokes were treating it like a T20. Where then were our T20 plans? Latham took way too long to change strategy and as was the case we only had one bowler on the day who could actually implement a T20 bowling plan.
When the opposition were threatening to get away, I used to think, "Nah, we'll be right. We've got Wagner." Now someone hits a couple of boundaries and it feels inevitable that they will get a hundred or the target will be chased down. This is in the course of 12 months.
The team have gone stale and Farmer Stead and the Postman have to go. Latham and Southee (for the umpteenth time in the latter's case) need to feel some jeopardy for their spots. Apart from that, we have the talent. They just need someone to remotivate them after the WTC win. I get the feeling for this group it was a huge relief to finally get over the line in Southampton and we have yet to rediscover the drive and energy required to push again for test wins.
Farmer Stead and Tommeh will have us believe that we came across someone playing the innings of their life and there was nothing we could do about it. Same thing happened last match. Same thing happened at Mount Maunganui except it was a bowler who up to that point averaged over 50. Either we are extremely unlucky or there is something very wrong with the mindset of this team.
