This has been the story of our test cricket this year - get into a strong position, then give it away. Young got a decent delivery and didn't really do much wrong, but wtf was that from Latham

England have been pretty lacklustre with the ball so far, really woeful from Latham to give them a freebie like that. Stokes has looked the most threatening to me, is making the ball do a little bit, the other three seamers all been a bit loose, lacking consistency and barely moving the ball.

Lots of bounce in the wicket. That Stokes lbw shout would've hit halfway up middle stump at Lord's.

Young got a reasonably good ball. Had to play at it and it straightened.

Latham was looking very good, barely played a bad shot and gets out to a long hop. He needs a lucky charm from somewhere otherwise his runs vs reasonable opponents won't improve.

Can't quite believe England's feeding Henry with so many cut shots. He thrives on that shot.

Need a big one from Conway, he's our best batter and needs to stamp his authority like he usually does. If he's leaving and defending heaps that'll worry me.

Even allowing for the fact that this pitch gives them a lower margin of error, England have bowled very poorly. Lucky to still be in the game.

Usual pathetic over rate with no excuse for it. Too many loose deliveries. That gift of a second wicket means they just about got away with it despite the high scoring rate.

That's a lot of runs for a session. Lot of loose deliveries from England and pitch not helping either for bowlers.

Shame about Latham throwing away his wicket, but a great 1st session. 108 runs in the first session at 4.15. Need to score 400+ so want one of these two to go big.

Good start and session overall, soured by those two dismissals. Young got a good ball (in fact a good over from Stokes) after playing quite beautifully, though the dismissal is a reminder that the opening berth doesn't suit him. Latham quite infuriating, but they've done the primary job.

Looks a pitch that should be to the NZ middle order's liking if they can get themselves in.

It's funny how often losing the toss works to your advantage, then of course the talk about what a horrible decision it was to do this or that.
In this case there's cause to believe it may have been a poor call.
Having said that, NZ far from in a strong position yet, they have been known to collapse before on occasion.
