So saying the game has evolved is the same as saying batsman pre 1996 clearly weren't trying. ok
Actually SL were trying this since 1991 with sending Kaluwitharana to open in ODIs in the 91/92 NZ tour. and then 1993, pushing Jayasuriya up the order. Once hit 65(56) giving an indication of what to come in the future.

England used Ian Botham as a so called "pinch hitter" opening the batting from 86 to 92. It didn't really work very often and he was sawn off by the umpire in the 92 final.

people rating Virat Kohli over Viv? wow , might as well say Hashim amla is a better batsmen then viv because he was the faster to 8k odi runs

I love the idea of Kapil/Viv/Abbas and Sachin being " anomalies " to a flawed logic when three top order batsmen and one lower order and all of different personalities.......the logic here is transcendent , maybe your stupid fan theory has holes in it?
