Garner probably played 75% of his games with a red ball.

Not that this is definitive proof for best or not best etc (and he wasn't a conventional swing bowler anyway). But it is interesting the conditions that have changed over the years making comparison harder.

Probably similar percentage stat for Viv Richards though, which makes his performances in ODIs even better in my eyes.

That`s incorrect. Burgey never claimed that.

He claims only WC ODI finals matter.
WC finals in particular. Semi finals also of some relevance though not as much. All other ODIs though, no good.

And as always I'm correct.

I know WC finals aren't as important as the legendary bilateral Singer Sewing Machine seven match ODI Cups of the mid-1990s held in Sharjah and dominated by Chokedulkar, but for many pf us, they're still right up there.

True.

2019 World Cup final

Colin De Grandhomme, 10 overs, 2 maidens, 1 for 25 against the fastest scoring white ball cricket team of all time in the easiest white ball batting era of all time. The big man is a great man.

Exactly. That's an ODI performance of some importance. If he took 7/15 in a JAMODI would anyone care? Of course not. It's why Kohli is a fraud in ODIs - check his record in WC KOs. Honestly, you'd back a third grader parachuted in on an hour's notice to perform at the level he has when it actually matters.

McGrath and it's not particularly close.

Might be selling Garner short* though, never saw him he could be a challenger.

*no pun intended

Not particularly close is a huge exaggeration. Actually top five are very close to each other. Each has unique capabilities throughout their careers. McGrath was miserly. Murali was a middle overs wicket taker. Akram was the original death bowler. Garner literally never had been taken apart, and Lee was a wickets machine. All have unique capabilities.

I agree with your top 3 - but not the order.

Should be:

Garner (Ave 18.85; ER 3.10) #1 on ICC All-time rankings
McGrath (Ave 22.32; ER 3.88) #5 on ICC All-time rankings
Akram (Ave 23.53; ER 3.90) #15 on ICC All-time rankings

Those ICC rankings reflect peaks rather than careers and, based on careers and volume of wickets, McGrath and Akram rank higher IMO.

Lee is massively over rated as an ODI bowler tbh. He regularly got tapped in the last ten overs of an innings. There's a reason Shaun Tait was a more than adequate replacement for him in the 2007 WC.

i agree with mcgrath but starc from aus alone is close. damn near instant win button for 2 world cups in the power batting era.
