Migara

International Coach
Sachin vs Virat

Even in that comparison Virat is much more dominating that Sachin. Only reason for me to rank him lower than Sachin is that he has not finished his career and we are not sure how severe will be the terminal dip.

The idea that Viv took advantage of his era is about as comical as it gets. The games has evolved into the most batsman friendly game possible since Viv’s day.
Not in 90s.

If Viv dominated his peers, Sachin dominated openers of alltime until the era change in 1996.

You are assuming Viv's era was tough because strike rates were generally low.
It is the same with Sachin, as opening was very tough..( so tough that Jayasuriya managed only 78 ) No one except Sachin managed SR of 80. Sachin's 94 SR made him so much superior to all other openers.
Imagine striking 16 points higher than Jayasuriya while averaging 49 ?.
Too bad, era changed suddenly and everyone started scoring faster.

For real though, imo it's Viv, but to pretend it's daylight either way is ridiculous. They were both ****ing incredible.
18k runs vs 6k runs is daylight

The gap between Viv and his peers is not enough to overturn the fact that Sachin literally has 3 times as many runs, centuries, and holds dozens of records no one will ever break. Sachin was ahead of his peers too, just by a smaller extent.

This isn't like ccomparing Sachin to Bradman. Viv wasn't averaging 99 or striking at 150. He wasn't numerically twice as good.

It's not that he 'took advantage' of his era, it's that he was one of the pioneers. Kinda like how Gayle dominated the early days of T20 cricket. It takes a while for players to adapt and get used to a format.

Sachin came up with the generation of players who grew up with ODIs, and as such there were several more players out there honing their games to suit that format. Just like how right now we have tons of players specialising their games for T20. Chris Gayle would find it harder to stand out if he came up in this era. He'd still be one of the best, but numbers 2/3/4 would be much closer to him, and the sheer volume of cricket played meant that there would be times where his form dips and he gets briefly eclipsed by the competition.

The same goes for Sachin. Plus he didn't only play ODIs in his peak, he had a lot of years before and after that peak as well. If you take Sachin's best years only then he's far ahead of his peers too. It's comparable to Viv's domination of his own era.

Again this isn't Sachin vs Bradman we're talking about. The gap is much narrower and even if you feel Viv was the better player, that gap is minimal and Sachin has 3 times the weight of runs behind him

Putting Viv at 1 is peak CW really. Trying to be hipster intellectuals rather just seeing what's blatantly obvious.

Until Kohli puts in a truly dominant performance in a WC, he'll never be in the top tier with Sachin and viv. He's been meh to good but not amazing in every edition he's played so far. Tendulkar was arguably the best batsman in 3 different WCs in three different decades.

Still, Sehwag played well that game. As with 2011 though, Sachin gassed up.

You can see Viru in this pic, trying to help Sachin.

Weird they're dressed as Wiggles, but you get my point.
