CW's Ranking of All-Rounders (Tests)

The Sean

Cricketer Of The Year
As a point of (debatable) interest, only ten men in Test history have achieved a peak ICC rating of at least 500 points, and as far as I can see two of them haven't even received a mention yet this in this thread, let alone a vote.

In that case I'll vote for one of them. Andrew Flintoff

If Mushtaq gets votes, so should Dexter. Both take < 1.4WPM which is hardly worthy of an 'all-rounder' title.

Both were mighty fine bats but .....

Mushtaq has a much better average and took a 5fer in the same match he scored a double century. And has there been a finer all round performances than this against peak West Indies?

Bowling stats would look a lot better if World XI "tests" vs England from 1970 were again allowed to be official tests (they once were). He took 12 wickets in one match (a 7-fer and 5-fer), 5-fer in another, and scored a couple of centuries in the 5-match series.

I prefer to judge on careers, not isolated Tests.

Its borderline imposible to hit 500 as a lower order bat, because you simply cant accrue enough points as a bat, regardless of how well you are batting if you dont score enough runs per game.

You can achieve decent points in the top order, even if failing a lot. See Benaud, top order. 623 peak batting points, despite an average of 24, with no real peak to speak of. Compare to Pollock, lower order. 565 peak batting points. Average 32, with a peak over 3 calendar years averaging 50s, 70s and 50s. Calendar years specifically (cbf to cherry pick it further to see if there is a better stretch) 29 tests, which should be plenty to move up in the rankings if batting higher up... more than Lambshanks has played to hit one of the highest rankings ever.

The closest to being a lower order bat in the 500+ club was Imran, who was more of a lower middle bat (mostly batting 7), and hit the 500+ on the back of being the highest ranked bowler since Barnes while running 49 average with the bat followed by 108 in consecutive calendar years. And even Imran barely made it.

Your debatable statement is noted. Not trying to get into fisticuffs with you for making what intended (succesfully) as an interesting observation. Just contextualising.
