Interesting that Bond is so far ahead. Quality over quantity?
Quality yes. Bond was a match winner. 10 win 2 loss 6 draw record is very good by NZ standards. At least 2 tests we would not have won without him - MoM and key 4th innings wickets vs WI at Eden Park (5-69 in 27 run win) and 32 run win vs Pak in Dunedin (3-46 including key late wicket of Umar Akmal c+b 75).Interesting that Bond is so far ahead. Also won us our 1st ever away test series in the WindiesQuality yes. Bond was a match winner. 10 win 2 loss 6 draw record is very good by NZ standards. Perhaps some ODI performances where he blew away the Aussie top order are also influencing our memory. Is a shame he didn't get a 2nd test series vs Aust.
And he never played a test vs England. If he'd been fit in 2004 we could've won that series rather than losing 0-3.Quality yes. He also owned a great Indian batting lineup.I think Bond is grossly over-rated. Take out his 'minnow-bashing' performances against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh and his average is a 'not-so-hot' 26+
A lot is made of his performances v WI but the Windies weren't anything like their sides of previous decades.
His bowling v Australia (3 wickets @ 96.33) and no Tests v England are huge gaps in his resume.
No it's actually like picking James Anderson over Ryan Harris. Which I would.Nah. In real life, no one picks Peter Siddle over Ryan Harris.
Bond's bowling v Australia (3 wickets @ 96.33 in his debut series) might look bad, but for comparison Shane Warne's numbers after his 2nd test weren't good either, 1 wicket @ 228.00.I think Bond is grossly over-rated. But he didn't. You know who has an actual body of work to base judgement on? Southee, Wagner and Boult.if he had another chance
Bond's series averages after his debut series:But he didn't. You know who has an actual body of work to base judgement on? Southee, Wagner and Boult.
Southee's last 9 series averages read: 25, 31, 27, 22, 11, 34, 18, 13, 25. Given the volume of wickets and the fact that he didn't break in half in every second test, I'll gladly take that. And there's no minnow bashing or awful green mambas in there.Bond's series averages after his debut series:
13, 18, 16, 38 (in SL, 1 high scoring draw, 1 test where Murali took 8 wickets), 9, 26, 25, 26, 19.
So not a single test series failure after this debut series.
No it's not. Until post above, I've genuinely never heard anyone talk about his performances v Windies.A lot is made of his performances v WI
Yes partly.Bond only gets overrated because of a dearth of great NZ bowlers. There's obviously Hadlee who is revered as a god but Dan ****ing Vettori is an option on this list. No one really cares about Bruce Reid or Brett Schultz these days. Even Bishop who had relatively prolonged success is forgotten in an army of demons.
and yet the thread is about NZ's 2nd best TEST bowlerNo it's not. Until post above, I've genuinely never heard anyone talk about his performances v Windies.
It's his ODI performances that get people talking.
