Shane Warne dead at 52

Cameron Smith is very different to Warne

He’s another Bradman

Basically a cyborg whom most people can’t relate to

Warne was the guy at the pub who was also a genius

People love Warne

They look at Bradman & Smith in disbelief and many hated them
Off topic but is that because league is so territorial and the international game is a joke? I imagine NSW fans would hate Smith during SOO and non-Melbourne fans would hate him in the club season, and then internationals are v unimportant in league and almost an afterthought.

In NZ, fans outside Christchurch would get sick of McCaw and Carter during Super Rugby (because they were so good), but love them once they put the black jersey on - and in union international tests are very important and a huge part of the year.

Warne's death has probably hit me almost as hard as Lomu's - both sporting freaks, both x-factor who made you want to watch, both destroyed the English, both signed up with big companies for crazy money, both stars within star teams, both were match winners at World Cups (although Jonah sadly never won a WC), both had issues with women, both kept their simple common touch and came across as good blokes.

Yep, this had me reflecting on Lomu's death too although I've found Warne's tougher to stomach since we all knew the seriousness of Lomu's health, whereas Warne's just hit us all out of nowhere.

Didn't think I'd be back in this thread so soon...but this hits hard. Guy had such a massively infectious personality and zest for life.

Was planning a night out but just not in the mood.

Also thinking of Kevin Pietersen. Such great mates and obviously know each other from the 05 Ashes, Hampshire and as colleagues in the commentary box. He must be taking this hard

When you hear all the reports about Warnie's interactions with people, and how loved he was by everyone who knew him, you have to come to the assumption that he must have been a very decent bloke. Regardless of what you thought of what he said at times, and I wasn't a huge fan of his commentary, the way he interacted with people he both knew and didn't know was pretty special.

Tbh the one time his commentary really grated on me, the last day of the 2013 Ashes when he asked Atherton 27 times whether Alastair Cook would be prepared to lose in order to win still came from that place that made Warne Warne. As a pundit, commentator and most importantly fan he wanted to be entertained. The cricketer in him wanted to see a side really go for it.

Maverick. It’s not real this, right?

Very grim... still processing this news. Have been listening to guys that's been speaking about him and everyone's got good things to say about the bloke. Healy said he knew Shane has signed up for an early departure but still about 20 years too early.

Probably the only Aussie guy (maybe Gilly and a bit of Ponting) I would make sure not to miss watching him live. Hated him when he played us but never missed a ball when he was on. Come to think of it Warne and Gilly are two guys I have watched the most videos of from Aussie from youtube whether it is reminiscing their performances or their interviews.

Strangely he was also the only guy I've ever rung talk back and complained about a player's behavior on field.

Very similar to George Michael in that respect, similar shock death out of the blue too. Other than the very public flaws both had nobody has a bad word to say about either and kindness and being a genuine person is what everyone says about both of them.

I thought that was a really good comparison - Cam Smith to Warne. Both have had their controversies: Warne and the diuretic plus the bookmaker thing and a lot of the off-field stuff, and Cam Smith with the chicken wing, ref manipulation, salary cap rorting etc. Difference being in their legacy that Warne is an entertainer, a larrakin, a big presence who isn't afraid to say what he thinks. Cam Smith is a boring bastard. I think us as the public can forgive naughty boys who entertain us. If you're going to cheat, and be vanilla, your forgiveness is not as forthcoming.

Man I keep going on YouTube since he passed away and keep watching his wickets package.

The way I see even hollywood A listers tweeting about him makes me realise this is one of the most high profile sportsperson death in a long time

Up with:
Kobe Bryant - 2020
Diego Maradona - 2020
Jonah Lomu - 2015

Also Martin Crowe was 2016, but he wasn't quite as high profile (but obviously widely known within cricket).

You could make a comparison between McCaw’s blatant career-long gamesmanship and Warne’s too.

His gamesmanship was extraordinary. Bowl a nothing ball, let out the big groan, stare at the batsman like it’s turned square. Have a word to the umpire on his way back about the batsman and what the deck was doing. He was a master at it.
