CW's Ranking of All-Rounders (Tests)

Cricketer Of The Year
Relieved Hadlee finally got picked - even though I'd voted for others, his selection in the top ten was inevitable.

I'll stick with my policy of voting for someone until they get in.

Pollock, there's some genuine underrating of him going on in both the bowlers thread and here.

Yeah logically should be Pollock given Hadlee was the last one. But I am going for Proctor since not have him in the top 10 seems odd.

You could say Hadlee and Pollock are being underrated relative to Kallis who came in third and was basically their inverse but I'd lean towards Kallis came in too high.

Pollock unlike Kallis never got his dues post-retirement. At one point had better averages than Hadlee yet remains one of the most underrated cricketers of all time.

The list started off with people voting on how good the players were and seems to have shifted into prioritising balance over quality... kinda making 2 different lists. Either Kallis and Sobers should be moving down or Hadlee and Pollock should be moving up.

Sobers had a period of about eight years where he was genuine Test class first or second change seamer and an accurate if not always penetrating spinner. Hadlee isn’t a batsman at all.

It is simple. In your imaginary team, you have already taken 6 batsmen including a keeper and 4 bowlers. One position for 5th bowler who is a good enough batsman to play at 7 remains. Whom do you take out of the two options? Have to just choose that option.

He's obviously a better bowler than Hadlee is a bat, but 2.5 WPM at 34 is not getting you to number 1 if priorising balance the way a lot of the recent picks have been going. He's too high, or Hadlee is too low (or should just be excluded entirely). They clearly cant both be right if judged in a consistent way.

During his peak bowling years Sobers was picking up close to 4 wpm @28. Figures of a very good frontline specialist seamer with a proper specialist workload too.

I dont think Hadlee's batting was ever viewed as being as good as a proper test class batsman. Sobers is pretty unqiue in that sense. No one was as good in their secondary discipline.
