CW's Ranking of All-Rounders (Tests)

If Hadlee is already picking up votes as an all-rounder, should we be considering Hammond as well as someone who's an approximate batting AR counterpoint? (I.e. awesome bat, handy but not special bowler.)
This is exactly the reason why I am voting for Botham ahead of Hadlee.

Think Hammond and Simpson should both qualify, though tempered to adjust for their relatively lacking bowling contributions.

Bolo.

International Captain
Could've had #1 batting AR, bowling AR and balanced AR (Miller) in succession though
Doesnt make sense. One of the roles is more valuable/difficult. Unless there is a big gap between the number 1 and number 2 of a particular type, we should be seeing the similar roles grouped together.

While I think they are often underappreciated, balanced ARs are simply more difficult to structure a team around. You often see Miller being left out of an ATG Aus squad for example, but any of the other 3 would get into both Aus and their home teams.

Maybe but I thought it would've been neat. Miller put together the most impressive batting + bowling performances over a series barring maybe Sobers. Used to think he was better than Imran, even. Just can't compute how Kallis is a better *all rounder*. Guy took 1.5 wickets per test. I know he's basically a unicorn and almost always gets picked in the opening rounds of a draft for reasons you mention but surely all round performances have to matter here. Not the sole metric, of course but enough to bump Miller up into Imran territory for me. Think Kallis the batsman is underrated and the AR overrated tbh.

I agree. Balanced ARs on paper seem more valuable, but in terms of real play, specialists ARs are better.

The issue with Miller is that he wouldn't be selected for either his batting or bowling alone.

Hypothetical atg team selection concerns shouldn't matter in evaluating how good/valuable a player was imo.

Nah, bollocks. For any actual side in history, he bats 5 and opens the bowling. The purpose of an all rounder is to give you options and make vital contributions. Miller did that perfectly. If Miller had averaged 45 with the bat he'd clearly have been the GOAT but he didn't so I'm happy with him at #3.

Oh and he actually won matches.

Kallis difference of runs and wicket is 22 after 168 test.Think it was more than 24 after over 150 tests. You can genuinely argue for Kallis to be no.1.The attack he played with is the reason his wpm is low.No.2 for me and a clear top 3 Imo.
