I thought it was a joke about the square as in the pitches, but I think he’s literally referring to the square boundaries. Not sure how close it actually is but Eden Park is reasonably long square…but then the MCG is also longer square than straight.
Yeah Mcg has much longer square boundaries. It’s diameter is about 170m, whereas Eden Park’s is about 135m.

Yeah I recall an overlay where the mcg was clearly bigger but only marginally so square.

The distance between goals is around 100m and behind goal is over 20m with a fair bit of extra space so the square boundaries are 70-80m

The square boundaries at Eden Park are generally 65-70 which is decent. MCG maybe 75-80 because they don’t use all of the available space any more, but that’s still very big.

Tbf to Eden park, those midwicket and extra-cover boundaries are bordering on above average. Just the straight boundaries that make playing there a bit of a joke at times.

It’s a bit odd that the Mcg has longer boundaries square than straight. Can’t really think of any other grounds that are oriented like that.

Surely you'd pick Wagner over Boult as the third seamer? Boult gets the new ball or he doesn't play.

Turner
Williamson

Taylor
Watling (wk)
Cairns
Vettori

Brisbane, WACA, and new Perth.

I feel weirdly ok about it. We had a dream run and a **** ton of luck for our all fast medium strat to net us a test championship, think it's healthy to have it exposed as a limited team comp to rely on
Yes and no. I don’t agree with minimising how good we are to that extent - no team is perfect and we still have various weaknesses in various conditions, but imo we won the WTC and got to world #1 because we were at least near enough to #1. I don’t believe there’s anything to ‘expose’, we’re just a flawed side like all sides.

I do agree though that a sort of artificial smugness might have crept in (among fans if not players) and it’s a timely reminder that our players are not actually destroyers of worlds and we need to take home series against ‘lesser’ opposition seriously. Can’t just say ‘don’t you know we’re a big team now’ and expect them to fall in a heap.

Can't agree about McCullum and Vettori being the best players. That was Fleming's last series (got his average over 40) and early Taylor who scored his 1st century in the first test and did well. Sidebottom destroyed us in that series though - 24 wickets in 3 tests which included a 7-fer and a hat trick
That's true, I was being slightly tongue in cheek (although I remember the Guardian OBO did describe our line up that way!). Note McCullum top scored in the first test - Taylor's first ton was on the first test of the return series in England.

Too many do imo. It’s wrong. Aside from Eden Park and the MCG the Gabba also seems to be massive square and shortish straight. Always has a very MCG feel to it imo with the wide open spaces square.

Bd should go a bit aggressive now and declare with a lead of 200-250 before lunch tomorrow. They can then push for an innings win.

McCullom and Elliot have done a good job of being neutral in the commentary booth.

New Zealand definitely came into the test undercooked and Bangladesh have had some luck. Jameson was laboring yesterday and the tail had no plan vs Mehidy.

Mominul's played some rash shots today but for the most part he's put together a 40 average test career by being aware of how **** he is and adjusting his approach accordingly. Couldn't possibly have got more out of his ability than he has.

Nah shud bat normally and see if they can get to 425. Strategic batting should only come in after that. They could still be 350 ao in these conditions.

It's Day 3. Their aim, as unrealistic as it may be, should be to bat until at least halfway to tomorrow and declare with the aim of forcing an innings result.

No thoughts of acceleration or declaration at all today. Just bat, and bat, and bat.

Driving to the game on Saturday the radio commentators were just hoping this wouldn't be too one-sided given Bangladesh were missing some players through injury or retirements. Lol. Would Patel have been a good option in hindsight?
