I kind of empathize with Ollie Pope and Rory Burns. Both would have averaged somewhere around 45 in 2000s or 2010s. They're not as bad as their statistics, just up against some really good bowling.
So , you are telling me Burns is as good as Cook if he had played in 2000 or 10s.

For one the square cut's gone out of the game more or less completely. Ppl dab it down to third man or throw the kitchensink if the ball's wide enough but the controlled yet powerful square-cut that every batsman reared till and through the 90s possessed is gone.
The straight drive, on drive and the extra cover drive have become rare sights like migratory birds as well.

He's a gritty batsman that's for sure. All he needs is few half volleys in the beginning to feel secure and confident which were quite common in 2000s.
Fast bowlers these days give no breathing space.

Whatever it takes!!!
Just saw the highlights of the wickets.... Except the openers, feel every wicket was through batters' mistakes as much as good bowling.

That ****ing drill Burns and Hameed were doing standing on one leg playing defensive shots says it all about this batting unit.

Try that drill and basically you're teaching yourself to play out in front of your body. Lo and behold how he got out.

Anyway, it's all meaningless. England is done as a cricketing nation. I haven't been so bored since West Indies visited in 2015/16.
