Depends on the field. With 5 crowded around the bat and acres of space in the outfield a full blooded shot can be the better decision, you don't even have to middle it and itl likely land safe
A defensive shot is the same. As long as you don't edge or miss it, it lands safe. And with an aggressive shot, you have much more chance of edging or missing it.

I've heard stuff on how this is an ATG Indian test side. Sure a great side but our current batting is barely 1/4th of what it was during Fab 5 era.
It was fab 4. Ganguly was not good enough to be included with the 4.

This is a side built on bowling so obviously the batting is not going to be as good.

Yes, but there's always a chance of what happened to Stokes there. Half the fielding side in your immediate vicinity has a way of inducing defensive errors.

You're saying it's more likely for a defensive error to happen than an aggressive error? Stokes wouldn't have lasted 77 balls if he had tried to smash 76 of them and defended at one.

this is the sort of attitude that made Lehmann-Clarke Aus some of the biggest HTBs the game has ever seen
i'm not saying play a shot a ball. i do think if you employ a negative mindset the whole day through on a 5th day there's no way you'll survive, just delay the inevitable
