think neser, haze, cummins plus others can snag an away ashes if batsmen figure out a method to not suck against swing
Pretty big if though. Especially considering that smith will be two years older and evidence is starting to mount that while he is still a solid contributor perhaps his days of bradmanesque run scoring are behind him. Not to mention that it’s unlikely that Warner will be around in 2023 either and if he is will going on 37.

yeah but they will rarely need big runs when playing in england. all they need is 250 average most innings to beat them

lol no it's not

Warner never did anything in England anyway not sure why he's relevant. It would take some big changes in the next year and a half for Aus not to be massive favourites in an England Ashes series

The history of the Ashes since 2001 when Australia’s Atg team was at their zenith has shown that facile Australian wins in Australia mean nothing in terms of their chances in old blighty.

totally different ball game over there. England also could be a very different looking side in 18 months time.
Not saying Australia don’t have a chance but I wouldn’t be drawing conclusions about 2023 off the back of this series.

England would be without Anderand and Broad

Warner played pretty well in 2015. I'd say he had a better series than Smith despite Smith scoring two tons

Err yes it is.
Better Aussie teams than this one have gone to England since 2001 and come away beaten.
add to the fact that two of your best batsmen are probably likely to decline further in the next 18 months. No way can Australia be deemed massive favourites in an away ashes.

btw Warner is relevant because
A) he will play in 2023 when he is nearly 37 so likely to do worse than he has historically done in England or
B) be replaced by a younger player with little experience in England and who will most likely struggle in the conditions there.

uh not since 2001

mcgrath injured in 2005

mcgrath/warne retired in 2007

this is probably their best bowling attack to go to eng for an ashes in 20 years

Not saying Australia don't have a chance?
Australia will almost certainly start at a warm to hot favourite.

Having watched more Test Cricket than most on this forum, this is by far one of the weakest sides ever to come to Australia. We had the halcyon days of Lillee/Thompson, Waugh's incredible sides and even Bradman's Invincincible but the POMS were always able to give us a run for our money. NOT this mob. Pommie fans/cricket lovers why has the wheels fallen offf this side?

why are we talking about a series in 2023 anyway? 18 months is forever and a day in tests; warner could retire, blokes could get injured, some freak talent could come from nowhere, pope could sort out his issues against spin etc. meanwhile aus has a whole bunch of very difficult tours coming up; who knows what’ll happen there.

its definitely the weakest struggling v an australian attack that is relatively inexperienced with 1 debutant

You're not entirely wrong that it's a very different set of conditions but your individual points are all poor. Whether or not better Aussie teams have been beaten means nothing because they're not up against the same English teams. Any reduction in output from Smith could, and should, easily be balanced out by improvement by the rest. It's just as unlikely that the rest of Australia's batting would be as bad as they were in 2019 as it is that Smith will be as good. And Warner did nothing in 2019 and Aus were still the better team . . . replacing him with a sign post wouldn't hurt their chances in comparison with that.

You don't need to look back to 2001 lol. 2019 was literally just 2 years ago, the sides were nearly identical.

I responded when someone said "Aus might have a chance in 2023 with x bowlers" because 2019 Ashes happened with nearly the same sides.

It's like saying "India might have a chance of finishing high in the next WTC if they play well". Like, I should ****ing hope so they made the last final and are beating nearly everyone they are playing anywhere.
