Jesse Ryder.
I've always been more of a fan of bowling than batting, and as such a bit more reluctant to recognise supreme batsmanship. But wow, the first time I saw Ryder unleash one of those effortless cover drives that he could play during a game at the Basin Reserve in (I think) early 2006... Nothing finer.
I can't help but think that with a little bit more mentorship and support (and understanding) that he could still be playing for NZ today. Such a wasted talent.

I remember he subjected us to a few of those in the ODI series in '06. Had to collect my jaw from the floor more than once.

Lara. No one mixed talent, results and box office better than him IMO.
The backfoot punch and the straight drive is quintessential Tendulkar.
Nobody will remember his records but the 2 iconic cricket shots.

NZC and Jesse
In 2003, the NZC were planning to send 19 year old Jesse Ryder to Pakistan for a short ODI series, but were talked out of it by Mark Greatbatch. Always wonder what might've happened if NZC had taken the chance to get Jesse into a fully professional environment at a young age, rather than letting him stagnate in domestic cricket for the next 5 years.

early career Ryder's bowling was truly a sight to behold. Ambling to the crease like an A's weekend warrior yet somehow got it up to 135kph barely breaking a sweat.
More like the kiwi Jacques Kallis.

If I am going for a box-office bowling attack I would have loved to witness, I would love to have seen peak Steyn (2010/11 probs but any iteration is great), Bond and a young Shoaib (think 99 WC) complemented by Warne. Full throttal!

Just an absolute joy to behold. As good as they are his career figures don't come close to the full story of his brutal, balletic brilliance.
Maybe I've reached that stage in life where rose tinted spectacles gild the geniuses of my youth, but since I've been watching cricket I still think there's never been another seam up bowler to hold a candle to the youthful, pre-injury Waqar; in his cups he was just a beast. The lateness and prodigiousness of his inswing seemed to defy physics.
The estimable Robelinda has kindly complied some of the great man's best work. Pour yourself a cold one, settle back and enjoy:
