The roller does have an effect but this has been outstanding from NZ, esp. from Young. Looks very composed and clear headed, two things you don't see from young batsmen playing in the SC for the first time from SENA. Latham has been what you expect of Latham. But next session will be the big one IMO. Usually 2nd and 3rd sessions should be good for batting here but if the effects of the roller wears off, pitch could get a bit more up and down. Set batsmen need to go big here.
Tbf, Young isn't actually young. He's 30 and has played an absolute shed load of FC cricket, including at least a couple of A tours of the subcontinent. Probably has had the best preparation for international cricket of any NZ batsman ever.

Yep Young is our first “Australian reserve” style player. Just like they seemed to do all throughout the 00s. Have this fully built FC cricketer that is actually ready made for Tests.

Whatever it takes!!!
Lol.. thought he was a lot younger than that just looking at him. 25-27 is what I thought. Never would have guessed 30.

The anti-Rashid Khan then.

Encouraging start for sure, but given how the spinners usually need one breakthrough to get on a roll, wouldn't be getting excited this quickly.

Definitely glad NZ have kept themselves in the game so far.

Young is like Michael Hussey or is it Devon that's like Hussey?

To be fair Young should have played in 2019 if he didn't do the shoulder.

100% all Indian spinners need is a sniff. Longer we delay it'd be better for us. We don't need to score heaps of runs, just have to stay in there. Deny wickets and not lose wickets in cluster.

29 actually now that I've checked, but yeah he's been around the scene in NZ FC cricket for nearly a decade.

Jadeja is such a good watch. Beautiful repeatable action. Perfect finger spinning bowling action.

fyi for Indian posters, back in 2015 Young (age 22) and Nicholls (age 23) were head-to-head for the next vacant middle order batter spot. Nicholls got 2 games and Young only 1 game for NZ A against a weak Sri Lanka A touring side, both scored runs in every innings vs SL A, but Nicholls had 3 innings to Young's 1 innings and got the nod when Williamson then Taylor were injured that summer. Nicholls made just enough runs in his first two seasons to keep the #5 slot, and Young had to wait another 4 seasons before making the test side.

If the selectors had picked Young for 2 games and Nicholls for 1 game vs SL A their careers might have been reversed ....

I was just thinking that if Nicholls didnt have such a solid record and was more mercurial like Craig McMillans record. Young genuinely would have come in for him years ago. Crazy to think NZ entered an era where you could drop someone averaging 38 with the bat.

Excellent Will Young. Great to see our batting looking set for the next 4-5 years with Latham, Conway, Young & KW in the top 4, even if Taylor only has another year or two.

In the subcontinent, he’s a master

Doesn’t put enough work on the ball to be consistently successful anywhere else
