So Rahane is officially captain for the whole series? Nice.

Agree Bharat should take the gloves ahead of Saha. He's 28, Wriddhiman is 37. Time for a transition.

Ashwin + Jadeja + Axar might be overkill, but assume India goes with those 3, I'd probably go with Ishant and Umesh as the quicks for the first test. They should be the freshest. With Rahane and the keeper, that leaves space for just 4 batters. Agarwal and Gill to open, Che Pu at 3, and I'd like to see Iyer in at 5. Keeper 6, Jaddu 7, Ashwin 8, Axar 9, then the quicks.

Batting is a bit thin tbf, hope Che Pu and Rahane find some runs.
How is Bharat's batting? Guessing if India goes with the 'overkill' combination above, they'll probably pick him over Saha as the better addition to the top 5?

If the batting seems a bit thin, think the selectors brought it on themselves by not picking Vihari in the squad. Rohit and Pant each stepped up at crucial moments during the England series last Feb, will be interesting to see who does it this time if India happen to be in a tight spot.

Bharath making a debut will be a big call though one I hope they are willing to do.
Rahane confirmed Iyer is making his debut.
Mayank is probably most key player in all this. He is a spin killer & if he survives new ball spell of Southee Wagner or KJ then it will make things lot easier for India.
Umesh will definitely play & is a amazing pacer in Indian conditions probably our best.. With his skiddy bowling & attacking stumps & can reverse.
Ishant is poor bowler when it comes to reversing & has lost good pace. Siraj will be better choice.

There is a Test series between the World numbers 1 and 2 about to happen here. I fail to see how being champion of cricket's most irrelevant format matters here?

We created an Ashes subforum for fans from the two mid tier nations as well, suggest you stick to posting there please.
It's just shame these two teams' players care so little about this series that they cbf showing up for it. Shows where their priorities are tbh.

Bharat's batting is reasonable. Poorer domestix numbers than Saha tho. More of a gloveman first it seems.

Vihari was sent off with India A to South Africa. I guess our only option for beefing up the batting would be to pick Jayant Yadav over Axar Patel.

Man, Cricinfo loves talking about, if not talking up, Mitchell Santner, saying he’s all but certain to take the second spinner’s role. Good white ball bowler alright but just mystifying how he continues to be rated as a test prospect. I really hope the think tank are on a different page.
Shows how much they know about nz cricket. Ian Smith is well informed, Craig McMillan's also well informed. So is Hesson. Vettori has no clue about our cricket (probably disinterested) and he's on Cricinfo panel. He thinks Ravindra is picked as an opening bat cover. Doubt if he even knows much about Sommerville.

They wouldn't have a clue about how Santner has gone in the last 3-4 years. Wonder if they even glance at the domestic score cards.

Cricinfo in general has absolutely no idea about most of our up coming players. They don't even know about Sommerville. If he does really well, they'll dig up the stats and present with gloss.

That's quite general about nz cricket. Most don't know about our cricketers. I think English media is well aware of our domestic players even. Not sure how but they had a good idea about each of our player when we last visited them.

If you’re playing three spinners you just need your two seamers to be “shock” bowlers/new-ball specialists.

If oth you play two spinners and three seamers, then one of the seamers has to put in some grunt work with the old ball.

Case 1: choose Jamieson.
Case 2: choose Wagner

Also on that note a two test match series between no.1 and no.2 test nation is very disappointing. These are two best test playing nation currently and we have two test matches scheduled. We played 3 T20s of no consequence. The test match results count towards WTC. Did the t20s count?

Honestly don't think he gets into the attack anyways. They've got Southee - KJ - Wagner and seems like they want to play just 2 quicks in the XI. Boult at best would have only played due to an injury to one of those 3.
What? Boult excretes all over Southee as a test bowler and Jamieson is made of glass.

India's last 2 tours to NZ have been 2 test affairs which is pretty disappointing imo. A 3 match test series gives a chance to touring side at least. Both BCCI & NZCB have tried to fill up useless T20 bilaterals in between on tours.

You could try make a case for boult over southee based on full career but southee has been well ahead for 2 years. Boult has been a bit too roundarm and it shows in his results. He did have the happy knack of bowling legside dribble in england and sneaking trash wickets which was very helpful.

Jamieson is yet to miss a test. He will miss tests eventually because he's a big guy and a real bowler but so far so good.

???????
And the stuff about Ajaz mentions bowling well in SL and England and in the Bangladesh T20s but nothing about destroying Pakistan in the UAE even though it is on the related articles on the same page. Weird.

Given the timezone issues my guess is the boards are less keen to schedule tests in NZ which won't maximise Indian viewership (though surely they can hold D/N tests then?). Also David White is simply allergic to the idea of a 3 test series. NZ got to play 8 tests in India from 2010-16 which is not bad at all. Should really have cut the T20s this time though.

Yeah a D/N test would be nice next time India tours. Really fits into our time zone & will witness more viewership for sure
