thierry henry is being unusually accurate in this thread btw. must be because the fab 4 are so relatively close in height, so he has to watch closely.

Yeah but Smith who replaced Clarke in Mohali was already a much better batsman than he was at, say, Melbourne 18 months prior, and already probably one of the best three or four batsmen in the country.

I actually think his true breakout tour was his away tour of SA. That was when he looked the real deal IMO, before then he was a bit rocks or diamonds.
For sure. Think he had a weird grip before with the bat coming in from a massive angle. He had eradicated that in India but the real change was the whole shuffling business in Perth later that year

Hmm it's not like Smith missed that many Tests between his two stints: a tour of SL, a brief tour of SA, a home series against NZ, a home series in India (where you'd think he'd have cashed in batting 6 because of how utterly facile that series got after the first game) and half an away series against India. That's, what, ten games? In between that he had a solid Shield season which basically got him his recall after everyone in front of him forgot to do their homework, so it's not like he was batting poorly.
I'm just referring to their records from 2013-2021 being virtually identical as per the link I posted. Obviously KW's career stats are more negatively affected by his earlier career, hence the significantly lower average.

All very big picture, career average only analysis of course. Second to Bradman for "batting average while an adult" is still pretty impressive though and puts a bit of perspective on Kane's extended peak.

On the topic of Kane improving some of his away numbers, I'd not realised that NZ's upcoming tour of India was only two Tests (though of course I should have, because "NZ" and "Tests"). I had naively assumed/hoped that a series between the top two Test teams in the world might actually be given a third game.

Good chance for them to sneak a series win imo. Especially with the entire lineup in garbage form and half dead because of the most brutal calendar in cricket history.

Actually to be fair, looking ahead New Zealand are scheduled to play 14 Tests between now and the end of 2022 (including tours of India, England and Pakistan), which by their standards feels like an extraordinarily packed Test programme.

Man as the rugby saying goes, that 2010 series really was a 14 point try. If Vettori's uh, scratchy at best side took that series with a touch more ruthlessness, NZ fans would be deservedly obnoxious forever. That squad looks a lot better on paper now than it was thanks to McCullum, Southee, Watling and WIlliamson cracking test cricket later on, and it doesn't look great on paper.

But.

We all know who the But was, and now whenever Indian fans are sad they can remember the time India 2010 applied the ICC games 3rd innings catch up through any lies possible code to real life.

Anyway India in the DRS era with Ashwin, Jadeja and Axar should really pulverize NZ in December. Ajaz Patel and Will Somerville haven't played first class cricket since last summer thanks to regional lockdowns. We might even gift you Santner.

I know your middle order is pretending to be 2006 Bangladesh but Rohit, Rahul and Pant have been mostly shining lights for you guys and I don't see why they would forget how to bat all of a sudden.
