Establishing the best decade for cricket: Finding the ATG XI from 12 decades of test cricket - then having a KO tourney to decide the best

Filling in the blanks of my earlier selection:

Bradman

Morris
Barnes

Compton

Lindwall

Hutton narrowly edges out Barnes, the other results pretty decisive

Not quite sure yet where Miller will bat but I guess 6 seems a decent place to start him and we can shuffle him if necessary. He can't be 5 surely.

Choose the number 5
Choose the wicketkeeper
Choose the 3rd and 4th bowler (can be spinners or seamers)

I originally had people choosing the spinner rather than 3rd and 4th bowlers, but I'm a bit torn whether a spinner for the sake of it is worth it here considering none really stand out as amazing for the decade

While I didn't vote for him in this particular team, one thing that has leapt out at me here is an even greater appreciation for Len Hutton than I already had. It's hard not to be astounded by just how consistently outstanding Hutton was for so long.

I'm gonna vote for the seemingly underrated Bill Johnston as the spinner. He only bowled it partly but the other options don't seem too appealing(Laker was not yet established with a flimsy record) and maybe Johnston and Compton can share the duties

Bedser took a bunch of wickets, not at the best average but hey, Bradman

Nourse
Tallon
Bill Johnston and Alec Bedser

Johnston was more left-arm medium fast, though he could be a useful spinner in the right conditions and I take your point that the cupboard is pretty bare in that regard - especially after the embarrassment of spin-bowling riches we had in the 1930s and will have again in the 1950s! Definitely agree that Johnston deserves to be in this team in some capacity though.

It seems beyond ridiculous to vote against a bloke who made five consecutive hundreds and averaged over 80 in the decade, but as brilliant as Everton Weekes was (and I am going to vote for him in the 1950s team), I have to go with Dudley Nourse. His performances after the war - often against strong opposition - were absolutely fantastic and deserve a spot in this team after just missing out for the 1930s.

For the 'keeper it has to be Don Tallon. Godfrey Evans obviously had the longer and greater overall career, but from all the reports of the men who saw him in action it seem that Tallon's work in those few years after the war was unparalleled.

Bill Johnston is a lock for one of the bowling spots for me. The other one I guess should probably be Alec Bedser, but I'm going to give it to Jack Cowie, another champion who lost a big chunk of his career to the war (and the rest of it to the fact that he played for New Zealand) and who did brilliant things against top class English batting line-ups, as well as in his sole Test against Australia.

Nourse
Tallon
Johnston and Cowie

Coronis

International Coach
Nourse
Tallon
Johnston and Toshack

Might change the vote to Cowie…. I just thought Toshack definitely deserved a mention.

Bedser got a bit of love but Cowie the comfortable favourite

Heres the current lineup, i've left 2 vacant spots but of course we can only fit one more into this XI. I think it's there's arguments for both sides whether that last player should be a batsman or bowler

Hutton
Morris
Bradman
Compton
Nourse
-
Miller
Tallon+
Lindwall
-
Cowie
Johnston

Now we pick the final player in the team!

Either pick another batsman(which would push Miller to 7, Tallon to 8 and makes Compton the 5th bowler)

or pick another bowler(which would have Miller at 6 and Tallon at 7)

I don't know whether to vote for Weekes or Bedser here. Miller/Tallon at 6/7 seems kind of a long tail as despite solid FC records they weren't that amazing with the bat in tests... but Miller was of course a top 5 bat so he should be able to handle 6 and we have Bradman.... so I'll guess I'll just give to Bedser so we have 5 main bowlers.
