I'd be pretty tempted to take Glenn Phillips. Can do the Pant fast scoring role which is handy in India - can't just keep grinding runs all day, and hopefully not be too expensive with the ball to rest the quicks or at least add variety.

Even if you treat Rachin as a part timer, I'd still say that's an option. Ajaz the best spin option Rn, I won't be swapping Wagz for anyone, but if absolutely required then yeah maybe Wagz out for Sommers /Rippon (don't think this'll end up well). I really like the Philips idea too but idk if he's good enough to play there

If Rachin isn't going to open I'd rather pick Phillips. I don't think Rachin is clearly better as a bowler (not yet anyway), and having someone distinctly different to Ajaz as the other spinner would be beneficial.

The next tour is to Pakistan for white ball cricket. The Pakistan and Bangladesh tour will thrown in some surprises surely before the India tour. Besides the T20 WC. A lot of tours. In 4-5 months time a lot will change although Black Caps selections are mostly conservative and will have recognized already majority of the players including probably playing xi for these tours.

I wonder if NZC is planning on resting players like England did recently. To hope the same players will play the pakistan, bangladesh, wc t20 within short period of time with so many quarantines is asking for too much. Chances are we many not see some of the players that are in England playing now and some key players like Kane, Southee etc... feature vs Pakistan or Bangladesh.

Fair, he opens usually anyway but thought it'd be better to get him at 6/7 initially to break him in? But opening with Rachin would mean Latham cn move down, hopefully (although I guess Conway would, mostly)

Also I get the thought, but surely Rachin is easily better than Santa as the SLA/Bat option now? If we're going with

Latham
Conway
Kane
Ross
Nichols
Blundell+
Jam
Somerville
Southee
Wagz
Ajaz

IDK, batting looks a bit thin, surely? Assuming we can't rely on Somers for some runs. If Philips is in, then who would he replace anyway? That just gives 3+Ajaz for bowling.

Ronchi said Ravindra, who didn’t play on tour, was seen as a batsman far more than a spin bowler at this stage.

Rachin Ravindra is veiwed as a future test opener.

“He’s still got a great skill-set with his bowling, it’s just the amount of bowling he’s got to get under his belt before it’s looked upon that much more.

“He’s naturally an opener and he’s done that really well domestically. But you can also chuck him in lower down the order and he can work his way up – it’s not like he has to open. He has the capabilities to bat long periods of time, he knows how to face quality fast-bowling and face good spin bowling as well.

“From a mental standpoint as well, as a young player he knows how he wants to play and he sticks to his guns. He’s a really good player for the future, that’s for sure

Sounds like our management is confused about Ravindra's skill set. It's a rare thing for a young player to be an opener, also bowl well enough to be considered a bowler. Good headache to have and don't think we've had a player like that before. Vettori batted at the top later in his career but wasn't a proper bat early on. Trying to think of anyone that came with similar skill set, a top order bat but pretty good with the ball. The records don't show that yet but spinners generally hit their strap with age.

Going by the recent statements by Ronchi, Jurgensen, Stead we'll definitely see him play in India and probably white ball cricket before that. I think ravindra has very good record vs Pakistan A from memory which will serve him well.

It'll be exciting to see Chapman, Phillips and Ravindra in the white ball format. All three can bowl useful spin. If they can be developed and show enough promise they'll be super handy in white ball cricket for many years to come. They can all bat and they're all quick scorers. Phillips and Ravindra are quite young and Chapman is not too old either. I reckon we'll see all three vs Pakistan and Bangladesh.

M Crowe.

He would have taken 80 to 100 test wickets, but for ...

22 year Hogan a better bowler than 22 year old Rachin.

Disagree. I thought Ronchi spoke well and clearly layed out his current strengths, and the different potential routes he may be asked to take to get into 11.

Good dose of realism to - on not over-hoping on his bowling too soon.

"I still want to learn and still get better, so that's a good sign. But, yeah, at this stage I just want to keep playing cricket, whatever level that is, for as long as I can... New Zealanders for whatever reason retire at 34 or 35, and once I got to 37 I can understand why they do - you get asked the question a lot, your age comes into question a lot more when you do things exactly the same as what you were doing two years ago, but you're doing them wrong because of your age which is sometimes a bit hard to swallow. Regardless of when I do pull up stumps, I still feel like I can play domestic cricket, I still love playing for my country and I still love playing for Central Districts as well."

Likewise with Jesse. Reckon he would’ve taken 100+ test wickets and denied lord Colin his test career if he’d fulfilled his potential.

So few... I guess if you're a batter it is so hard to develop other skills. Batting consumes so much time and to come anywhere close to good takes a lot of effort. Kallis gave up bowling, Sanga gave up keeping so did Baz. Hadlee was a very good batter but couldn't keep up with his batting given his commitment to bowling. Stokes is probably on his way to concentrate more on batting and bowling a little bit. I think only Gilly lasted as a pure batter and a keeper in the long run. Tough to be an all out all rounder.
