Thought that was reasonable. Patches were good, dull for large periods. Thought Sterling was very good (which seems to be a minority view?) and defo agree with the comments that he was lucky to score as I thought he took it brilliantly.

Anyway a win is a win.
Yeah I think people were really harsh on Sterling in that first half, glad he got the goal.

That was okay. I don’t quite feel the unabated glee that Lampard and Ferdinand seem to be, but it’s an okay start.
Yeah its definitely nothing to shout about. But its our first ever opening game win at the yuroz as well, can understand the relief and satisfaction from past players.

I agree to a large degree but feel we had a harder game than Italy at least.
Yeah, it’s hard to judge until you’ve seen their opponents in other games. I was a bit more impressed with Italy than most were, thought they had very good shape. Belgium was the one where I felt like the terrible opposition made them hard to judge.

Maybe Croatia are just a team that you need to beat this way. The flow of the game will always favour them because of their midfield, but they won’t create much, and you’ll get a few chances to punish their loose defence. They’re also just good enough that a win is a win, I don’t want to get all ‘England should be winning better’ against a team at that level. But opening games are kinda all about making snap judgements and I do come away thinking England might be a little worse than I thought they’d be.

My criticism probably seems harsher than I meant it. One of my recurring rants is about how much of forward play is the ability to get on the ball in dangerous areas. When I say he’s getting into good positions then wasting the ball I kinda mean it as more of a compliment than an insult. He’s doing the much harder part.

I am very much hoping this team was horses for courses, as southgate says he wants to do, and it was less about keeping possession, and more to nullify theirs, and in the end that worked, hopefully we will be more fluent going forward, for once we have the players too, but in the end it's the Sweatties next, and I expect that to be a ****ing mess of a match.

Beats scraping a draw against a poor side like Switzerland like we did in 96 and the sheep molesters did yesterday.

Thought it was a very decent performance, myself.

Pleasantly surprised Foden started too. Honestly thought Southgate would revert to the Sterling/Kane/Rashford default.

Phillips fully merited his spot too; reckon Henderson will be lucky to get on at all now, unless we trying to shore up a lead against a proper side in the KO stage.

Pickford scares me though; couple of times he shaped to come and then didn't, and the ball at his feet is an accident waiting to happen.

Hopefully, once Maguire is fit, a more commanding centre half will suit him better; neither Stones nor Mings really seem to be big talkers.

Given how we've started most tournaments though, a 1-0 win against the world finalists of only 3 years ago will do.

Agree with grecian's take on the game. Not a barnstorming performance but it was fine, we were just about the better team and got the win.

Agree with UC that we didn't look as good as either Italy or Belgium, but that's because a) we had a much stronger opponent and b) we're not as good as either Italy or Belgium. Don't think this round of games was needed to deduce this, but I guess we have been overhyped again if we were seriously 2nd faves with the bookies.

Phillips was really good. Mings and Stones were fine. Not playing our most creative player hurt our creativity. Trippier is an excellent right back.

Kinda reminds me of a 1-0 win over Paraguay that I only vaguely remember.
I thought today's performance was better than that. Not out of this world, but good enough. After what we've seen from the cricketers, I'll take quietly competent. And I agree with all the plaudits coming Phillips' way; he was much better than I had expected. Like everyone else, I don't really get Trippier playing at left back. Maybe Southgate was excessively worried about Croatia after the WC and picked his strongest defender rather than some one who could attack and cross with his left foot. Mings was better than I had expected too, and great in the post-match interview.

Let me hypothesize that Croatia have reverted to fizzling out of any any and all major tournaments until they once again come out of nowhere and win the 2038 FIFA World Cup

This is kind of what he’s been like all season. He gets into good positions with clever movement but doesn’t use the ball well when he gets there.

Grealish is the opposite.
Hard to judge how good Grealish actually is as his go to attacking move is to run at a defender then fall over.

Not sure if I am meant to but I wouldn't mind seeing Scotland going through as long as it's behind us.

Probably enjoy a Scots run more than I would a Wales one
