Meet the ICC Hall of Famers: Adam Gilchrist

Pap Finn Keighl

International Debutant
Single-handedly destroyed the legacy of Dujon+healy+ all other catchers who can't bat.
Basically it's bcoz of Adam Gilchrist that these days wicketkeepers feel shame when they average 20 odd with the bat, earlier they were tagged as legends

GOAT
Yes.
Ames was arguably better WK-Batsman combo, but it was Gilly who changed the equations.. Partly due to the era he played.

There's no indication that Ames was as good a batsman or a keeper as Gilchrist. From what I've read he was considered to be not a particularly great keeper at the time and was in the team for his batting. Not sure why the era makes a big difference either.

AFAIK Ames was a great WK in the league of Healy + he was capable of averaging more than 40 with bat.
WK with better batting ability expectations were already there in the air during mid 90s, an ODI thing may be.

Did you just make that up or actually hear that somewhere
Even his Cricbuzz profile says " many regarded him as the finest WK ever " or something like that.

Wisden described Ames as undoubtedly greatest WK batsman of alltime in his Obituary while conforming WK skills as of high standard.

Look a bit deeper. It was apparently a bit of a stir at the time because back then keepers were picked usually on their keeping whereas Ames was picked for his batting, and there were much better keepers than him not selected. Of course now the opposite is true.

Ames was a perfectly fine keeper for the time and one of the best CC bats. Not Gilchrist-level though.

Ames would have to have been a good keeper to be selected at that time as a keeper. Not necessarily the best in the country but they wouldn’t have just tossed the gloves to a batsman like they do now, he would have to have been up to standard. He probably was “undoubtedly the best wicketkeeper batsman of all time” at the time his obituary was written in 1990. But most observers of both accept that Gilchrist raised the bar considerably.

Ames was not great WK is a myth Build around his Batting ability. Victim of his own success.. I think.
Wisden too suggests the same
