Give this a thought, Australia went unchanged and India were forced to make changes during the test series due to injuries. The result, India won. Injuries happened, bowlers did fatigue.

Surely every player wanted to play every test match but didn't materialize did it?

Why do you think England rotate their players?

High stake does take a toll mentally as well. You can't compare county and club cricket to international.

If wtc finals was not happening it's all good but for the finals you need preparation + rest imo.
Who are you trying to convince? No one disagreed that rotating bowlers can be useful and is often prudent.

The sticking point was you wanted to rest your WK

I think wicket keeping in back to back games with only 3 days rest between games at the age BJ is at and his history of injuries it would pay to rest him to keep fresh for the all important game.

Yeah I think almost everyone would disagree but it's not a 100% unreasonable opinion. Can definitely see your logic.

3 days between matches has been pretty standard for NZ for at least the last decade. Admittedly that’s usually in 2 match series, but they’ve had a few 3 game series as well.

My XI for 2nd Test:

Latham
Conway
KW
Ross
Nicholls
BJ
CDG
Jamieson
Wagner
Ajaz
Boult

Southee is in form and definitely going to play final, so I'd swap him for Boult and then bring Ajaz in for Santner.

Actually amazes me how many chances Santner has had in red ball...

“No Santner. Looks like his cut finger is too badly cut.

KW with dodgy elbow, may be rested.

Pace bowlers from Lords being spoken to individually about game vs rest/training.

Boult will probably play.”

Would love Ajaz or Rachin to play, and make a mess of England. But have hoped that Patel would do similar in games in NZ, but due to conditions/lack of opportunities/captain unwilling to use him, it hasn’t worked out that way.

Wonder who will rest? Southee didn’t seem to take it well last time he got “rested” in Sydney. Wagner won’t want to. CDG probably needs game time more than most. KJ who knows?

You’d think the batting line up will have another go, but if KW is ruled out, then Young will play.

And I’d say BJ will get another go. I also like the Nicholls/Taylor swap around. Nicholls to me seems the more solid player now (even when dropped by fielders 7 times).

I can see why they like Santner... because this team looks unbalanced if CDG or BJ fail. But Bay Oval century aside, Santner hasn’t really convinced with the bat either.

Latham
Conway
KW (Young if ruled out)
Nicholls
Taylor
Watling
CDG
KJ
Wags
Boult
Ajaz

Maybe they should take a punt on Rachin at 6, and shuffle everyone down? Wags looked great with the bat at Lords.

I was wondering why Kane retired in the inter squad after getting to like 15. That doesn't sound like Kane. He'd rather never retire in any game. Maybe it's for the best, he could hit lot more balls and get ready for the finals.

Injury or not Santner should not have been picked. Ajaz should be or Ravindra.

This will tell us if BCs are risk takers or not. Risk and rewards really. I'd go with Darryl for CDG, Ajaz for Santner and Ravindra for Williamson. I think they will probably rest BJ as well but not very sure about that.

Latham
Conway
Nicholls
Taylor
Ravindra
BJ
Darryl Mitchell
Jamieson
Wagner
Boult
Ajaz

If Jamieson is also going to be rested then Doug comes in, if Wagner is not available one of Henry or Duffy will come in.

In any case Edgbaston pitch is not pace friendly and you don't need 4 front line pace bowlers. 3 pacers, 1 slow medium and 2 spinners will be the best combination for bowling IMO.

would be a shame if kane needs an injury rest

latham
conway
williamson
taylor
nicholls
watling
cdg
jamieson
wagner
ajaz
boult

rest southee, trial boult. santner's injured, so trial ajaz. if williamson is out, conway slides to #3 and ravindra plays or conway opens and young bats #3.

the above won't happen though. stead and williamson will do something like open with young or bat ravindra at #7. NZ and the NZ A program disagree with CW fandom pretty often.

nz side without williamson away from home looks so shaky.

Well ****ity ****. I guess rest KW and bring in Young to bat at 3 (should really be Dev at 3, but makes no sense to have him bat out of position for 1 game). And then probably just Boult for Santner. Could be interesting to see what happens if Young makes some runs and Taylor fails again.
