Shock recalls as Zimbabwe announce exciting squad for World Test Championship
Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) have announced an eighteen-man Test squad for the upcoming 2005 World Test Championship. The Chevrons come into these championships hoping to build on a mixed 2004 which saw a home series win to Bangladesh, before a disappointing series defeat against Sri Lanka.
36-year-old Andy Flower sees a return to the Zimbabwe squad and looks set to play his first Test match for Zimbabwe in over two years. It follows previous announcements from selector JoJo Ncube that the board would seek “to build bridges and resolve disputes with all eligible players”. Another high-profile player to benefit from a change in policy is Murray Goodwin, the top-order batsman could see a return to international cricket for the first time in over four years following his surprise call-up. Andy’s younger brother Grant Flower also returns after missing the recent series defeat to Sri Lanka.
Despite a strengthened Zimbabwe squad, young seamer Tinashe Panyangara is rewarded for his promising start to Test cricket against Sri Lanka with a place in the squad. Panyangara is joined by fellow seamers Andy Blignaut, Douglas Hondo, Chris Mpofu and Heath Streak. Meanwhile, Graeme Cremer joins Ray Price as the specialist spinners in the squad.

JoJo Ncube also issued a note of support for 21-year-old batsman Hamilton Masakadza. Following a hundred and an innings of 85 respectively in his first two Test matches against West Indies and South Africa he has had a slump in batting returns.
“We are fully aware that Hamilton (Masakadza) has not lived up to his potential in recent times with 3 ducks and 66 runs in his last 8 innings. However, we are confident that he can refind his best form for us and become a key batsman for Zimbabwean cricket over the next decade.
The fixture list for Zimbabwe’s World Test Championship is expected to be announced in the coming days.
