The role just suited him. Has always been able to take wickets and the makeup of the side and conditions meant he didn't have to play the holding role that he just can't really do. Still had plenty of bad days but played a role in a lot of wins.

Any bowlers' effectivity increases when you get more good bowlers around them. It is why you see someone like Ashwin do so much better in the last two tours of Australia, for instance. And even in India, since we got Jaddu back and got Shami reversing it hoops here.
Also why I think lone ranger type bowlers like Hadlee, and Murali had it so much tougher.

TBF the umpire who made that shocking "played a shot" call has been having a great game till then. Excellent bunch of decisions off Axar's bowling. But that was an absolute shocker.
The other two have been very dismal.
