Well this is just unequivocally dire. I can kinda get behind a youth focus on fast bowling (if Simon Mackin is getting a game, you've got problems), but honestly the idea that future development should be prioritised at the expence of weakening the team in the short to meduim term is not one that washes with me at all

It's funny isn't it, that this era of Greg Chappell inspired youth focus with fast-tracking has produced only one batsman who can be sure of their place and very few domestic performers.

As recently as last week, states were unconvinced the Sheffield Shield or Marsh Cup would go ahead due to border restrictions.

There will be no more biosecure bubbles, partly due to finances but also to relieve players after months living in contained environments.

But now there is optimism First Class and limited overs cricket will continue as planned and the onus will be on each state to organise travel and accommodation as normal.

The Marsh One-Day Cup is due to commence on February 16, with the final set for April 30. The Shield will restart on February 12.

Outside of Jhye Richardson, who are the fast/seam bowlers with a genuine chance in the next wave of quicks ?

Xavier Bartlett, Billy Stanlake, Will Sutherland, Riley Meredith. A bit of a mixed bag ? Thoughts gents.

He might be lacking in pace and may be more under the radar than the other 3 but I've liked what I've seen at times from him in the BBL. Obviously haven't seen as much Shield as I would like to.

I like Bartlett and Sutherland. I'm not sure Sutherland quite has the pace to be a gun specialist bowler on Australian roads tbh but I think he's the best of the bunch at the moment despite that. Bartlett seems the most likely to play a heap of Tests to me -- he's not there yet but he's a gun.

George Bailey hung around the Tassie side even after he knew he wasn't going to play for Australia anymore, just so he could show the next wave of young Tigers around the ropes.

When Australia has had it's most jarring home season in a while and it's open season for test spots, it's incredibly stupid of Finch or Maxwell to think their test playing days are over, even if they felt like that there is no point turning Victoria Shield team into the second XI without any genuine push for the spots.

When Australia has had it's most jarring home season in a while and it's open season for test spots, it's incredibly stupid of Finch or Maxwell to think their test playing days are over, even if they felt like that there is no point turning Victoria Shield team into the second XI without any genuine push for the spots.

I don't think Finch will be considered for tests again (sadly, because he should've been given a run at #5 back when Langer forced him to open), but if it were me selecting I'd be telling Maxwell he's still very much in contention for a spot in the middle order.

It's a weird world we're in now though, and it's very conceivable that thru only a couple of injuries and the restricted nature of the world, that either Finch or Maxwell could find themselves in a test squad rapidly with no red ball cricket in however long.

Unless I read it wrong this has nothing to do with what Finch and Maxwell want. It's the selection/management at Vics saying that they don't want them.

The whole point of the article is that Finch/Maxwell are unlikely to be available for Victoria until February next year. Its entirely reasonable for Victoria to start thinking of whether they'll play again when they will likely miss 2 years of shield cricket

With so many players being absent due to the S.A. Tour & N.Z T20s, the shield is going to be very interesting when it get's back playing.
Around 40 first choice players unavailable due to touring, likely to be a few injured players as well unavailable, I reckon if we all went down to our local shield ground, we might get a call up.
I'm a strokeless opening bat, and non-turning spinner, so I would fit in well.

I would be absolutely stunned if he was even remotely considered, Langer has never liked him anyway. Personally I disagree with that, but I can't imagine it being a possibility at all
