Is Jadeja the most underrated cricketer going?

He's at that stage where people are confused if he's a mediocre cricketer in the midst of a great purple patch, or a great player starting to find his his range.

Also he's a very anti-cricket player. Relies on subtle variations with the ball and plays ugly, jammy but effective innings with the bat. Doesn't pass the eye test with those who only see him occasionally. Not very aesthetically pleasing or technically sound.

people severely underrate the value of a great fielder too. He's turned many games with his work in the field.

His batting has really evolved over time and he is quite compact now.

Knows exactly what to do with thr ball according to situation. In Sydney he used yorkers to good effect for example.

There is no finer example of how Jadeja had evolved as a cricketer than how his overseas record has improved. I used to ridicule him 5 years back(like most), then developed some grudging respect for him around 2018. In 2021, there is no way he isn't a great cricketer.

His bowling is very close to as good as any Indian spinner overseas. Only Ashwin and a select few like Bedi, Chandra are marginally ahead of him abroad. His batting and fielding are several leagues above any of them(even though Ashwin is a fine lower order batsman), enough to put him in a league of his own.

Jadeja's reliability as a world class cricketer can also be gauged from the fact that his batting average has been better than his bowling avg in all of the 6 tours he had abroad in the last 3 years (SL, Eng, Aus, WI, NZ and again Aus).

Possibly the most valuable cricketer in the world right now.

Under-rated for sure(especially by people who look at his early record and blatantly assume that is how it always has been). Hopefully not by future generations.

Jadeja was literally a meme 6 years ago. Started out as a bits and pieces LO hack. The fact that he's almost a genuine all rounder in tests is crazy. Real entertainer.

yea i like this guy despite his stats still flattering him imo. i hate using meme commentary speak, but he's a winner. he's the second most concerning player for the opposition behind kohli. bumrah will be an atg all going well for him but he often slips into the 'unlucky' length between the great stuff so you get a breather during his performances.

with jadeja, even in conditions where his style of finger spin will usually be useless (i say usually because of course he pulled off that heist with the ball) he's just such an annoying **** who never goes away with bat, ball or in the field.

A Steve Smith story in the making then? :p
One thing common between both is that they both relish in proving their detractors wrong. All those Sanju Manju words about Sir RJ are vanishing in thin air now.

Smith too had his fair bit of critics earlier. He proved all of them wrong and how !

Ravi Jadeja belongs to the exclusive club of all rounders who #make things happen.

This isnt a good description of his batting anymore. If you didnt know who he was and watched any random jadeja innings from the last few years, you'd go "Yeah that looks like a proper number 6 batsman".

Yeah - Just need to watch the 60 at MCG.. off 160 odd balls. Pujaraesque but didn't give the impression of having to work really hard.

It was as brilliant as any of ChePu marathons this series. Came in when India were still behind, and then put up a 120 run partnership with Rahane in which he was equal partner more or less. And most importantly blunted the 2nd new ball attack effectively, and set up a winning first innings total.

Was the highest partnership of the series or something wasn't it?

Saw him being left out of many B-G XIs which is mad. He averages ~18 with the ball with a 5+ WPM vs Aus in 12 tests (half of which came abroad too) and has a ~30 batting average.

Overall, his batting has really gone up a few notches since 2015 or so. Think he's averaging 50+ in the last 5 years with the bat, and ~25 or just sub-25 with the ball in the same time. This is across 30-40 tests or so.

He started off as a bit of a joke meme, then became a hell of a bowler, then became a guy who could contribute with the bat and now he's a guy who's a legit lower order bat and still a pretty damn good bowler. All on top of his fielding efforts.

That Smith run out was HUGE and underrated at the same time. We looked like we were having trouble getting him out, and he'd probably have put on 30+ or more at that stage.

Since the beginning of the home series against NZ in 2016(when India's home domination really started), Jadeja has scored 1459 runs @ 48.63 and taken 149 wickets at 24.75.

Apart from the best in history like Sobers, Imran and one or two others, this is as good as it gets for a 4-5 year timeframe.
