have seen smith do it a lot. i've even seen him shadow batting with the batsman's bat while they get a drink or get physio attention.

Yeah I can buy this. I doubt he ever intends ill, just gets overwhelmed by events and the bubble he lives in. Good for his batting but too unpredictable for any kind of leadership role.
