My thoughts in addition to above picks :

England : Barnes s/b an auto pick with the variety he brings to the attack. How did everyone miss him ?

Australia : Lillee for fast bowling leadership. Warne goes without saying. Miller not an auto as a bowling AR preferable

Pakistan : Hanif provides the rock to Pak volatile batting. Waqar not an auto, as Fazal could vie for that spot for variety

NZealand : Turner an auto to open

WIndies : Gibbs s/b an auto as the only spinner specialist of note

India : Need Kohli or Dhoni for leadership
,
S.Africa : Can have both Faulkner and Tayfield to complement their plethora of pacers

Now you mention it, many of England's best players have been opening batsmen. Maybe you could make a full team out of them....

1. Hobbs
2. Sutcliffe
3. Boycott (6)
4. Hutton
5. Grace (1)
6. Gooch (5)
7. Stewart+
8. Brearley*
9. Lloyd (4)
10. Rhodes (3)
11. K Jennings (2)

Would probably draw a lot of matches.
A few option to strengthen the bowling (excluding players like Stokes, Tate & Verity who were pressed into opening once or twice): Trevor Bailey opened for England 20-odd times; Ulyett and Barlow were regular openers and bowlers in the 19th century; Bob Barber was probably better than Lloyd or Jennings as both batsman and bowler. Or Bill Edrich (part-time opener and bowler) would add another pace option.

Bailey a good shout I overlooked. Barber I'm not very familiar with but reading up on him just now he seems a good fit. I don't know the 19th century guys at all but seems there is the potential for a near-functional XI here.

I'll confess that Jennings was included just for the cruel punchline of batting him below Rhodes, who actually played as a #11.

My picks were rather people that were picked in every (sane) person's XI rather than anything else. I don't include Lillee, Warne, Gibbs, and Faulkner in my ATG XIs FTR.

How do you set up your Aus ATG XI without Warne and Lillee?

I’d assume Davidson Lindwall McGrath Miller and O’Reilly? Still a ridiculously good attack, would have no problem with that.

I find it hard to imagine anyone leaving Marshall out of a WI XI.

Its not that crazy considering they have Roberts, Holding, Garner, Ambrose and Walsh. For me Marshall is still the first bowler picked but its not completely crazy (though inadvisable) not to include him.

Yeh fair enough. For me he’s the second bloke picked in a WI all time XI and probably third picked in a world all time XI

Another player I missed for an auto-pick,

George Headley to open for W.I. All the other openers would need to fight to be his opening partner. Name 2 opener's with better credentials than him.
