then you should divide Indian test history into two (almost) equal halves and go for:

Pre 1978 India

Merchant
Gavaskar
Viswanath
Hazare *
Umrigar
Mankad
Kirmani +
Nissar
Amar Singh
Bedi
Gupte

versus

Post 1978 India

Sehwag
Gambhir
Dravid
Tendulkar
Kohli
Kapil Dev
Dhoni *+
Ashwin
Kumble
Zaheer
Bumrah

I think the top order is pretty much equal

Post 1978 team has better pace bowling, and the pre 1978 team has more potent spin bowling

The all rounders and wicket keepers are also kind of equal

Late middle order batting quality in the recent team is decidedly better. Dhoni could be the game changer.

Removing all bias, here's the

All-time ICC Rankings XI (1920-2020)
1. Hutton
2. Hobbs
3. Bradman
4. Smith
5. Ponting
6. Sobers
7. Sangakarra (+)
8. Imran
9. Cummins
10. Muralitharan
11. McGrath

Big flaw is of course no ranking for keeper so Sangakarra as the #8 all-time ranked batsman who kept in 48 Tests gets it, unless someone knows another unbiased WK ranking system

Barnes and Lohman are #1 and #2 all-time ranked bowlers but excluded because pre-1920

11. Wagner

I think Kapil Dev batting at 6 is a bit high. He did best, and batted most of his career, at 7 and 8.

Whatever it takes!!!
On a side note, found that Ashwin's away record has been incredible since mid 2015. Averages 23.8 (97 wickets from 21 matches).

Even when restricted to SENA countries, he averages a very good 27.02 during this period.

He is easily the best spinner in the world for me and has been for a while. I guess the issue is that the next best is Jaddu and he is also a better bat and therefore, when selecting only one spinner for those conditions, one of these two miss out. But I think this test has shown us the blue print for at least next few years.

Pretty good side actually. Would have Bumrah over Broad.

Not enough Australians tbh

NZ test team retired before 2010

G Turner
S Dempster
A Jones
M Crowe
M Donnelly
JR Reid
C Cairns
R Hadlee
I Smith
J Bracewell
J Cowie/S Bond

(or one of Reid and Cairns at 6 and both Cowie and Bond)

vs

NZ test team of players who've played since 2010

T Latham
B McCullum
K Williamson
R Taylor
H Nicholls/J Ryder
BJ Watling
C De Grandhomme
D Vettori
T Southee
N Wagner
T Boult

The earlier team has much better openers and Hadlee, but it would be an interesting match especially as they'd be against a team with proven combinations.
