In a different circumstances he might have been keen to go off for the same reason (can't fail if you're not out), but with two openers in the squad currently injured it really changes things.

Sharma will still be in quarantine for the next test.
Gill for Shaw, Rahul for Kohli and probably Jadeja for Shami. having said that, if you’re playing two spinners in Aus without a seam bowling all rounder you’re losing every match by three figures or near enough to an innings.
If Shami is fit, would seriously consider Jadeja for Kohli and shift the rest up one. Gives you five bowlers and Melbourne is flat. What you do with your keeper won’t matter tbh. Neither will make a substantive difference given the other outs through injury and unavailability, unfortunately
