Yes Popli was the one they were snubbing with that decision, wasn't it. Brownlie wasn't turning out for ND A (contracted, but maybe retired from the format or injured).

interesting that they sent kuggs in ahead of hampton. i thought hampton was meant to be a batting allrounder, so it doesn't bode well for his future if they consider kuggs better in both departments.

i guess it's hard to deny kuggs etc etc

Brave of Muller to give Sears an earful as he walks off. Might get a few around the ears himself during his next turn at bat.

What ND following on...a first inning mid 250 set by Canterbury ?

I think it's time to get some reasonable decks, this is not helping much. Half decent bowlers will knock over the sides consistently. Why are the groundsman leaving so much grass?

all right *****, it's the moment no one was waiting for. here is a statistical filter of selected plunket shield bowlers since and including the 2015/16 nz season ranked by bowling average. test match performances are included because i cbf filtering them out manually.

for reference, the career shield records of wagner, boult, southee, cdg.

neil wagner - 71 matches, 318w @ 25.93
trent boult - 30 matches, 107w @ 23.97
tim southee - 32 matches, 135w @ 21.42
lord colin - 81 matches, 126w @ 29.61

doug bracewell4112130.61
jacob duffy4211333.61

notes - matt henry's shield career reads 151 @ 24 and easy mode ball 102 @ 18. bracewell's shield career 197 @ 30.

i love how many people seth rance will trigger by being so good with the new kookaburra. if he was english they'd call him james anderson.

kuggs' stats aren't melted by his early career here, he had a really good middle of the decade before a blip in recent seasons.

interesting to see the medium pacers are making a sneaky return here after the purge, and this summers early lawns will only help.

kuggs and bracewell really have fallen into the pack and henry is also slipping. the top 5 have their averages well clear of the field.

How has Glenn Phillips never played in the ipl before? Has he never put himself up for auction or teams just not bidding on him? Fail to see why you'de buy a josh philippe or a tom banton over Phillips.

let's play nzs next top order batsman, featuring the number 6 and brought to you by the hidden maths of innings dismissed = 69 (nice). this also includes test match runs.

rachin ravindra1996934.6017
jeet raval63348132.83616

notes - nicholls averages 70 for nz A, 39 for nz and 33 for canterbury. 3 of will youngs 6 tons on this list were scored in the past 9 games and jeet raval avaerages 38 for auckland and 46 for nz A during his career.

yea so conway has a massive average but joint least games and young hates scoring centuries. phillips numbers don't look crash hot here at all either. i think we can also see just how far away rachin is from being test standard.

i had a look to see if anyone could match conway since his plane landed and the answer is no. in the same timeframe will young played 27 matches and scored 1642 @ 43 with 4 tons and 7 fifties, albeit in a wider variety of conditions. nzc have really ****ed up by not giving conway a season or two in the nz A setup.

finally, i know you're just dying to see the engine room challengers post watling.

i think that answers why jimmy is well outside the test squad unfortunately.

I'm outraged that Williams has pipped M McEwan in the battle of the most medium of medium-pacers.

Rae and Tickner could be added to the list too. Even though it's improved in the last season or two, Tickner's average is terrible with 120 wickets at 38.

ND Game done and dusted... I've seen tough early season pitches before and not easy to post big scores but this is at a different level. Canterbury scored 266 and won by an inning and 34 runs.

Will wait to see how ND bat to confirm how pitch is playing, but looks like Canterbury's good batting lineup at 200/6 has failed to take advantage against ND's second string bowling attack (short Southee, Wagner & CDG). Several starts in that, highest score a breezy 50 from L Carter.
Ok Canterbury winning by an innings and 32 runs suggests those conditions were very difficult for batting and I was too harsh on Canterbury's 266.

Watching highlights of Carter's 'breezy' 50-and-out from 59 balls, all the boundaries were from bad balls - particularly from Sodhi who conceded 40 from 7 overs - rather than adventurous shotmaking.

assume the only reason Otago declared 3 down with a lead of just 279 is that they think tomorrow will be rained out

This looks well set up for a Wellington troll-win imo, even though their batting has underperformed so far this season.

Just at the right time, it was a bit worrying seeing him struggle to post reasonable runs. This four day has been good for Blundell, he's played positively and hasn't gone into a shell trying to get through periods of play. That style of cricket just doesn't suit him. He needs to be looking to score. Same applies to Ravindra and Conway in my opinion. Both of them are touch players and need to be positive and not try to survive. Something to salvage out of this game. The game looks shut but funny things happen.

Surprised to see Andrew Fletcher playing in place of Sears. Covid replacement? Hope Ben Sears is all right.
