alec bedser in the top 5, i did not expect that.
He did bowl a ridiculous amount of overs per game. When he was a selector he was dismissive of workload concerns John Snow had as he expected his bowlers to shut up and run in all day. Solid 20 kph difference between the 2 tho.

Turns out Bedser bowled 52 overs per match. This is 12 more than John Snow and staggeringly, 6 more than Warne, a spinner.

He isn't really forgotten here thankfully. Gets picked in drafts and many pick him in their Aussie ATXI. Admittedly I hadn't taken note of how high his WPM was especially considering when he played. Maybe his average of 25 in England explains why he's underrated but this is more than made up by his average of 18 against WI. A peak rating (912) that was 10 higher than Trueman too.

Where's that Statman guy doing the videos - would be great to see a WPM line chart over the course of each of their careers.

I guess some were consistent throughout, others (Waqar? Wasim?) tailed off at the end. Some might even have had a late resurgence (Mitch).

It’s amazing that only Hadlee and Lillee have managed to finish their careers with more than five wkts per test. At different points, Steyn and Marshall got there. But to actually finish long careers with that level of consistency... is truly remarkable.

Mixture of consequence of losing form/ability and also other bowlers also taking over (Ambrose/Walsh in the case of Marshall, Rabada for Steyn), which may not have happened for Hadlee/Lillee.

Would also have liked to have seen a 'peak WPM' - which ties in to my earlier request of line/curve chart which would reveal a lot.

Lindwall's tailed down from 184/44 to 228/62. That's 44 wickets in his last 18 matches. Was recalled in 1959 when he shouldn't have. I think McGrath got to his 300th in his 64th. Pretty great considering he played alongside Warne.

For Steyn it was over 5 wickets per match around 80 tests into his career. More than rabada it was injuries which reduced it below that mark towards the end.
