haha, i'd be tempted to promote pope but i understand why they don't. it would open the door to bed in crawley or lawrence at the more forgiving #5 or #6 position.
Yeah I really don't want them to break up the 4,5 and 6 of Root, Stokes and Pope although long term I would probably like Pope and Stokes to swap. If the lineup in this Test was the long term one for some reason then you would definitely be moving Pope to 4.

yea for workload reasons id be tempted to swap pope and stokes as well, but i can also understand giving stokes as much chance to influence the game as possible.

where does lawrence prefer to bat? if he's a #3 you'd be tempted to just take the plunge. zak crawley might ton up if i say this but...i don't really get it. like, he looks fine if suffering from the gangliness extremely tall batsmen exhibit but he doesn't scream generational talent and neither does his county record. i gather from you guys he's more of a 'correct school' selection.

Lawrence started his career as an opener but has been batting at 4 and 5 more recently. Hit both his Lions tons at #5. Has only played at number three in some T20s I think.

Lawrence usually bats 4 for Essex but we all know that Root at 3 has to be avoided at all costs so it might well be the way to go, can understand why they really want to keep trying the Denly thing for now.

I think Crawley could be decent, there are moments that you can see a good player. theegyptian knows more about English domestic cricket than anyone else on here and he was talking about him playing for England early last year. I also think he sort of ended up in the team by accident, he toured for experience and then people got injured and came in and kind he kind of did fine.

Was that as soft as it looks on cricinfo?

And I'm sure his skipper was really chuffed to come out five minutes for tea after a shot like that.
