He's done far better than we had any right to expect after his batting in SA.Bess justifying his place at 8 here. Lad is talented.
Our lower order isn't quite what it was when Swann was around, Broad hadn't had his nose broken by that Indian quick, Moeen still knew which end of a bat to use and Curran or Woakes was in the side.For all the hand-wringing about England's tail wagging, their record with the lower order over the last 5 years while solid isn't as excellent as you might think.
Though in fairness it's also a pretty inconsistent matter IMO - either the lower order runs are really crucial or they completely fold.
