*Official* West Indies Tour of England 2020

It's been a while since we had a left arm fast bowler, but the more I see Preston McSween, the more I like him.

I've already joined that train since earlier this year.

Desperate for this to start. Would even watch a live stream of them training or something.

I didn't get to watch that much of him this year. Is he swinging the ball into the right handers?

didn't get foakes get worked over by the west indies last time out?
Yeah, looked very decent against a predominantly spin attack in SL but appeared to struggle against genuine pace.

I like the boy and he seems a very organised batsman, but I can't quite shake off the suspicion he's become a better looking option the longer he's been out of the team because of Jonny's and Jos's relative struggles in red ball stuff of late.

Tbf, most people were calling for him to be selected recently more along the lines of his keeping being better than those two, combined with the fact that he couldn't realistically score many fewer runs than Buttler was at that point, rather than for his batting per se

The thing with Foakes is that he got so screwed over, with playing so well in Sri Lanka and then getting shunted down to 8 but really the gains are probably pretty marginal when it comes to keeping, Bairstow in particular has become more than good enough it is just his batting has fallen off so badly. I still suspect that Bairstow is really the best of the three, especially if he is going to be batting at 7. I still really want Buttler to work out though, just can't give it up.

Yeah, if they all play to their potential, Bairstow's batting is probably far enough ahead (although at this stage we don't really know what Foakes is like as a test batsman) to make up for the drop-off in keeping, since as you say he's a much better keeper than when he started.

I really don't think Buttler is going to come good though. Obviously he's quite probably our best ever ODI bat and players can improve of course, but he averages 32 in First-Class cricket, we've probably done well to get out of him what we have. He'd hardly be the first player to be brilliant at the shorter formats without ever really doing it in tests

Windies are playing their first inter-squad practice match today. A 3 day one. Holders XI won the toss and put Braithwaites XI in to bat.

Don't know the teams yet. It's not being streamed but there will be updates on the Windies social channels.

The 4 day match next week will be an FC match with proper umpires who are currently isolating in the Old Trafford hotel also. Strange times.

Update - Teams are:

Kraigg Brathwaite (captain), John Campbell, Shamarh Brooks, Shai Hope, Roston Chase, Shane Dowrich, Raymon Reifer, Chemar Holder, Anderson Phillip, Jomel Warrican, Keon Harding, Oshane Thomas, Marquino Mindley

vs

Jason Holder (captain), Shayne Moseley, Jermaine Blackwood, Sunil Ambris, Nkrumah Bonner, Joshua DaSilva, Kyle Mayers, Rahkeem Cornwall, Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach, Shannon Gabriel, Preston McSween

Not long after posting that the score came in. 23/1 after 10. Campbell out for 0, bowled Gabriel caught Joseph. Alzarri is usually at fine leg so I'm guessing he was out hooking.

Slow going but wickets intact
as i was discussing earlier and as JOJOXI said, if you can get kraigg to be doing this it’ll go a long way to you guys winning, especially in the second dig (i suppose the first is just as important though). to blunt the swinging ball and the england attack, they really are an attack like australia’s where if you demoralise them and take away their strengths you can really get on top of the game.

would love to see a staunch series out of the windies openers paving their way for the middle order to flourish themselves, and giving the bowlers a real chance to do their magic

Mindley? When did he get added to the touring squad?
I think he has been part of the reserves the whole time. It appears they bought some reserves to hep prepare for England specifically. Coach Simmons said that one of the reasons they brought McSween, for example, is he is a left arm swing bowler like Sam Curran. Mindley is a swing and seam bowler, more similar to English bowlers than our others I guess.
