An XI who locked horns against them in their playing days and did well against them.

Sunil Gavaskar
Graham Gooch
VVS Laxman
Sachin Tendulkar
Mohinder Amarnath
Allan Border
Imran Khan
Kapil Dev
Rodney Marsh
Richard Hadlee
Anil Kumble

6 Indians in this XI, but I guess there aren't many better options.

Whatever it takes!!!
I would actually bat Ponting at 6 and Steve Waugh at 5 in your original side.. And Jimmy Amarnath at 3 and VVS at 6 with Border at 5 in this one. I juz like the tough as nails batsmen at 5 and the stroke makers at 6.

I'll go a little narrow on the matter and choose the best XI out of Clive Lloyd's West Indies after the 1980 NZ series until the 1984-85 Australia series, and Steve Waugh's Australia until his retirement.

Matthew Hayden
Gordon Greenidge
Ricky Ponting
Viv Richards
Clive Lloyd (c)
Steve Waugh
Adam Gilchrist (wk)
Malcolm Marshall
Shane Warne
Joel Garner
Glen McGrath

I can't believe you would speak in so deprecating a manner about Indian cricketers in these eras. Very disappointing tstl.

While you're here, don't forget to vote for fellow Indian fan Burgey in the upcoming Quarter Finals in the BOTM thread here

McGrath and Garner bit samey so I'd go Holding
Interesting you say this, cos I don't know that they really were tbh. Both tall streaks of pelican **** but that aside their MOs were pretty different imho.

Personally I'd always choose blokes who get bounce over a flatter trajectory bowler who's faster, unless the latter is someone like Wasim who hoops it around corners and brings more than just raw pace to the table.

or Steyn... The flatter trajectory works if they can move the ball in the air actually, even if its not off the pitch. Otherwise, yeah bounce probably preferable, also coz they can be more economical in general.

You're probably right. I may have simply grouped both together in my mind bases on the height bounce factor. Still, Holding adds a bit of pace and X factor which is a point of difference. Or Roberts for that matter. McGrath and Garner bowling together would be a dream too. With Marshall there's already enough skiddy pace in the attack you could say.

Macartney actually has the better spinning record than Armstrong, I assume you were referring to Armstrong as the second spinner in that 5 man attack though

With Armstrong surplus to requirements(hell even Mark Waugh could bowl some overs too) I'd take another specialist middle order bat instead of him, either Ian Chappell, Darren Lehmann or David Boon
