To think this you must surely have only seen a couple of good performances and missed most of his career
Can't say that I've seen anything from him that'd put him in the "rubbish" category tbh. He captained WI in all three formats, taking over from Sammy no less. Jim Maxwell also rates him really highly as well.

I wasn't commenting on his leadership or character, maybe they are fantastic and he's a top bloke who did some great work behind the scenes. His batting and keeping skills left a lot to be desired compared to other international performers though.

Jacobs is very far ahead of the second best keeper bat the WI have produced since Dujon. It's probably a 10 way tie for second but yeah Jacobs rules

So many awesome performances in both tests and ODIs against Australia from 99-01

I'm not saying he was outstanding or anything. Just don't feel Ramdin's a wasteman.

Also Jacobs was comfortably the Windies best bat at the '99 WC

They've never had a keeper come close to that title before or since at a WC

96 not out in one of the 2000-01 Tests in Aus sticks in my memory as well

can't remember too many errors as a keeper which is rare too

good player

I don't remember much about that 00-01 series except that it was dull as dishwasher. I couldn't believe it was the same side that mauled us at the WACA 7 years prior.

Lara had one great innings in Adelaide and the rest of it he was a bunny

That was peak McGrath, and Warne didn't even feature at all that series

Yeah Ambrose played his last test at 36 and Walsh 38

But Ambrose played the 2000 England series in July/August and the Australia series was only a few months after, you'd think he'd have hung on that little bit more considering his awesome record here

If he played that series it would likely have pushed his career bowling average up above 21, good one to miss tbh

On a side note, yes, 20.xx looks a lot cooler than 21.xx. Only 3 bowlers in history have taken more than 200 wickets at an average of under 21. Marshall, Ambrose and the under-rated Garner.

400+ wickets at under 21 is an immense achievement, something which no one else has achieved before or after King Curtly. Pretty much as good a bowler as in history.

Hayden had a pretty average series anyway. 2 fifties from 10 digs. Walsh did enough damage to him anyway I dunno how much more Ambrose could have inflicted. His '01 ashes was even worse.

In fact it's extremely impressive that he used an Indian tour to establish himself in the side. How many aussies used a home season against a weak attack(Ponting, Slater, maybe Langer) or an ashes series with weak english bowlers(Slater again, Martyn) around that time to make a name for themself.

If Hayden had failed in the India series like Ponting and Gilly, or hell if he only had an okay series like Waugh, with his crappy WI and Eng series performances either side he'd have never made it beyond '01.

Whatever it takes!!!
Think it was around the start of a close working relationship between CA and BCCI. Hayden mentioned he had been to India a year or two as part of some exchange practice program or whatever.
