I fractured my eye socket playing heads and volleys at school. You can guess which I went for, and which the guy who wears steelies to school went for.I actually remember playing football in the backyard and when I was 10-11 and one of my friend in his effort to head the ball swung his head back to get momentum and smashed my other friend's teeth in who was right behind him. He actually lost both his front teeth, was pretty scary at the time. Lots of blood
Also, GIMH's right, headings going nowhere, even in the top flight, unless you specifically legislate against it, and that'd be just ****. There's too much to gain by heading - getting on a cross that loops over the defender, cutting out the long ball down the channel. Ban it and the game becomes a long ball sport, where dinking it over a defender is far easier than passing it around them. Also the game would become more dangerous, in that people will still try and hit the ball high and early to gain any advantage, so overhead kicks will be connecting with peoples temples every match.
So long as its a legitimate method of contact, it'll be used, and some weird folks (hi Phil Jones) will inexplicably lead with it over feet. That's on them if they want a skull crushing. As the likes of Petr Cech will attest, banning heading doesn't remove horrific head injuries
