Some DRS stats for 2019 tests based on Cricinfo scorecards. "Upheld" means the umpire's decision was overturned; "Umpires Call" means the review was struck down as no conclusive evidence to overturn (e.g. on LBW's).

Terminology is a bit confusing. "Upheld" means "Overturned"? Took me a while to get to grips with that.

Yeah terminology refers to the review. So if the review is "Upheld" it means the decision was overturned.

Indeed. We need to see how they fill in the forms after the game, how often they forget to count to 6 and how often they stand their round in the bar in the hotel before we can decide how good an umpire they are...

On average a team use 4.67 reviews in a game. Waste 2.38 review, Overturn 1.49 reviewed decisions. The average team has a 51.1% chance to waste any given review, and a 31.9% chance to overturn a reviewed decision.

England by far review the most decisions in a game with an average 6.25 reviews in a game. Afghanistan and Ireland are also clearly still getting used to the system as they have on average reviewed 2 or less decisions per game (Ireland 2, Afghanistan 1.33). Of teams that have played more, Sri Lanka review the fewest with 3.88 per game.

Unsurprisingly as they also use the most, England also waste the most per game with 3.25. Ireland and Afghanistan waste only 0.67/0.50 per game respectively and of teams that play often, West Indies is the most frugal in wasting only 1.67 per game.

England once again come up trumps in number of overturned decisions per game with 2.17. Afghanistan overturned the least with 0.33, and of established teams, Sri Lanka only 0.75 overturned per game.

But statistically who is worst and who is best?

Sri Lanka have a 64.5% chance to waste any given review, and only a 19.4% chance to successfully overturn a decision. Closely followed by Australia who waste 60% of their reviews and only succeed on 21.8%. Both teams are comfortably the worst with about as much distance between them and the 3rd worst, as the best of the established teams and the 3rd worst.

Ireland are the best with only a 25% chance to waste a review and a 50% success rate in overturning, but for the established teams we have West Indies successful on 44% of their reviews and 37% chance of wasting a review, as the only other team to successfully review more than they waste. Though it would also be fair to say that England are the best reviewers as the more decisions overturned in their favour, the better result for the team.

Not really, the decisions being complained about weren’t even ‘wrong’ and would show up as correct decisions on these stats. There’s making howlers and then there’s favouring the same team on every close or close-ish call.

I am oddly happy that India did not even get a mention in your post. I take it as a sign of improvement from the early days of Kohli letting it be up to the bowlers. :laugh:

Also, lol @ total sneaking in ahead of South Africa and India. At times, sorting alphabetically is not the best idea. :)

Also I left total so stats could be compared vs. the average. It's not sorted alphabetically either, it's sorted via % to overturn a decision when reviewing. SA are identical in terms of figures to the average, and India so marginally below average it's not worth talking about.

Australia and SL are the real spuds here.

So Wade's batting reviews are responsible for 1/4 of Australia's successful reviews. That makes the overall stats look even worse for DRS calls by Paine in the field.
