So what?? I specifically said the 90s. Overall yeah Sachin takes it over Waugh but in the 90s Waugh was right in the same league. Sachin had 1 series vs an atg where he did well (imo well = 50+). In the 90s Waugh had several: WI '95, Pakistan '94, Pakistan '95 (h) , RSA '97 (a), WI '99 etc. Some of you people act like it's some sort of an insult to even insinuate anyone being in Sachins league. Sorry but in the 90s Waugh was.
In late 90s Aravinda de Silva was also in the same league as Tendulkar. That doesn't make him an ATG.

Tendulkar has higher cumulative average than Steve Waugh in 90s against AUS, SA , WI , PAK . Why are you ignoring AUS for Tendulkar who were the best side of 90s ?

Waugh was definitely in the same league as Tendulkar in the 90s. A tad better even maybe overall wrt that decade. Not controversial in the least.

Sachin had a better career overall and, more importantly imo, he was much better to watch with a wider range of shots and gears.

Why shouldn't Steve Waugh be penalised for having lower average vs SL, NZ , ENG and IND as compared to Tendulkar in 90s ?
Nobody considers Laxman , Pietersen better than Dravid, Inzamam for their record against AUS + SA.

The SL-Aus '99 series was pretty interesting. Blewett and Slater had two 100+ run opening stands then a 200+ run one a few months later in the opening match of the Pak home series. All 3 partnerships were against some quality bowlers and the SL ones in very difficult conditions as well I assume since both Waughs barely managed a run in that series. Blewett was meant to be hopeless against spin too but did well that series

You'd think most people would have picked them to be the future of the Australian top order of the 2000s... And of course we know the two blokes who ended there instead

I think Kohli hasn't been discussed enough here after his name appeared and deserves a bit more attention. To my mind, one characteristic which typifies him the most is his intensity and drive to improve. He wasn't a prodigy like many others which meant he was not seen as the next big thing for a good number of years. Certainly love it when someone turns it around like that and says "Look, I am not what you thought of, I am something else".

Where does this Kohli not being a prodigy thing come from? He was the U-19 India captain for a reason.

He had great skills as a leader from a young age but people who saw him around that time felt he was too emotional to focus and improve his game to reach the level he is today. Certainly I was one of the doubters and thought he was someone who would get easily satisfied with whatever he achieved (those over the top celebrations during his initial days). Glad that he proved me wrong.

I do agree Waugh had more great performances than Tendulkar against the great attacks of the 90s, but can we stop using series averages for stuff like this? Its a seriously poor metric to use for such a small number of innings.

Was that ever my argument?? No. I simply said Waugh was in the same league as sachin and Lara in the 90s...smh

Patented lie. Vs RSA and Pakistan in the 90s Waugh averaged more . I'll give Tendy leeway because he hardly played Pakistan. As for Australia, only one series in '99 was played vs an atg attack. Tendy did 'better' vs the WI but tendy again only played an atg wi attack once ('97 series) and even then, that series doesn't compare or have the impact to Waugh '95 in the WI. Bottom line 90s Waugh up there with SRT/BCL .....peace!!

I'm curious to know what other metric to use?? Afaic overall average is a fine starting point but equally important is against whom one performs etc.

Dude for the love of god, literally no one has said that Waugh was ever better than sachin. All I've said is that in the 90s, they were in the same league. Sachin v Waugh in the 90s is not like what we're seeing currently between Smith and Kohli (in tests).
