DoG's Top 100 Test Batsmen Countdown Thread

Whatever it takes!!!
And Kohli does seem a little higher than what I had initially expected in this exercise. But like I said, it is silly to judge careers when they are still underway.

The analysis by checklist thing has been on overload this thread especially from Logan, which is all he ever seems to post about. Bit tiresome to read tbh.

Well, so are stephen's and Burgey's responses here. They all cancel each other out ultimately.

Think there is something to be said for the recent increase in the number of people who play inside the line of balls leaving them too. I mean, Steve Smith made it a habit whenever he made runs against India in India to keep playing inside the line of the ball. Not saying Sachin was not actually beaten a few times in that test, but there were a few occasions where he was consciously playing inside the line too.

To me, AB;s knocks against peak Mitch still the best batting performances of the decade. And maybe KP's onslaught in Mumbai and then against peak Steyn and Co. in England.
That Perera knock was something else too a year or two back. Insane stuff.

I rate Tendulkar and Lara higher than any other batsman in last 30 years because they both were equally good players of pace and spin bowling. Steve Waugh was a very good player of pace bowling but he is not even in top 30 players of spin bowling imo even if you ignore his Asia record.

I understand rating Lara and Sachin higher but surely not in top 30 players against spin is a hyperbole? Or do you mean over the entire history of test cricket?

Yeah but Perera felt like a nothing to lose assault for a long time. One of the reasons which makes me rate Lara's 153 higher than both Perera and Stokes knocks last year. But as far as pure batting exhibitions go, those knocks I mentioned were a class of its own.

Yeah it's fair enough to criticise someone for having a stark gap between their Home & Away performances or even if they struggled against a "good" team with a large sample size but this just seems like needless critiquing. Sunilz feels more obnoxious about it as he seems to be doing it just to knock down one certain countries players (that and also the fact that his calls have lead to multi-page arguments)

Nah sunilz has been very consistent from what I have seen in this thread and seems to apply same standards across the board. Logan basically worships Sachin and its getting almost as tedious as Burgey about Border or stephen about any Aussie player, really.

Logan has good posts when it has nothing to do about Sachin though.

Ok let me try
IND : Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Sehwag, Siddhu, Pujara, Azharuddin
Pak : Inzamam, Anwar, Younis, Miandad, Misbah
SL : Jayawardene, Samarweera, Sangakkara, Desilva
Aus : Hayden , Martyn , Border , Smith
WI : Lara, Chanderpaul, Sobers, Richards
SA : Kallis, Amla

I have already named 25 . I am pretty sure there are many .

As I said, over the history of cricket, you may well have a point. I just think from 90s to today, he is definitely among the top 25 batsmen even against spin.

I have been extremely consistent with my opinion in this thread. I have already said earlier none of Kohli, Dravid, Waugh , Chanderpaul deserve top 15 position. And DOG's rating validate my opinion.
Steve Waugh doesn't belong to same class as Tendulkar and Lara . He belongs to Dravid, Border class.

The only reason I dont rate Kohli higher than Dravid as of now isnt necessarily because his career hasnt ended yet, its because he has only had 3-4 years of truly elite consistent batting. Before mid 2016, Kohli's career upto that point had been decent but a tad disappointing. Was brilliant at times andit was obvious he'd be awesome eventually, but he never put it together like a truly great batsmen until a few years ago.

I do expect him to go down as a better batsman than Dravid by the time he retires, but if he retired today, no way. Dravid's quality points at a comparable point in his career (around 8-9 years into his career) must've been pretty ridiculous.

I always assume that when people say that they don't X>Y because X's career isn't over yet that if X retired the following day they wouldn't say "okay now that he's done, okay X>Y", but I know I do project my own philosophy on others sometimes so maybe I'm misreading people. I assumed your explanation was pretty much the only reason people ever gave that as a reason, but I guess some people weirdly do start rating careers less as they get longer sometimes.

Sachin isn’t even my favourite cricketer BTW. Just mentioned that he has a good record everywhere and against everyone.

The biggest debates or “fights” I got in this forum were regarding Sobers’ poor record against NZ and Rohit being a better ODI batsman than Gilchrist.

I was the one who got into the Sobers debate. The issue I had was when you mentioned you were surprised that many people rated Sobers higher than Tendulkar despite his NZ record. If you had just mentioned you rated Sachin higher, I would not have got into that debate :) Cheers anyway.
