Yeah, bit of a mea culpa with Somerville being called up for a withdrawn quick bowler. Will be interesting to see if he makes the starting lineup.
How about that NZC mea culpa for the tortured genius of Jamie Siddons? Fair dinkum tortured; he's absent from his job at the Redbacks for personal reasons. Michael Pollard for Latham it is.

"When you get put under pressure for the periods Australia have put us under, then you have to question what we're doing," Stead said.

"Australia have three bowlers at 145kmh and a spinner that's taken over 300 test wickets so you're always up against it. You don't get a reprieve and that's the hard thing for us."

So what about Stead, and batting coach Peter Fulton?

"We always look at ourselves when we're not getting the results and try hard to work with the guys and say how can we develop you? We've had plans in place and worked hard with the tail about how to eke out more runs.

"Unless you're doing that day in, day out, change is quite difficult to see in a short period. That's our challenge to find ways to have the players uncomfortable, and getting comfortable being uncomfortable, because that's what Australia do to us all the time."
Geez, this is hardly very inspiring stuff, is it? Sounds like Stead’s putting up the white flag tbh!

****ing Gary Stead. One pre-season we went to Lincoln and he taught us how to charge spinners "properly".

Fast-forward to the end of the season...most common occurrence how batsman were getting out that season...stumped.

One difference between this and earlier Oz/NZ series in Oz is the way Australia batted. Usually in the past it's been about aggression and dominating and demoralizing the bowlers.

This series they've been much more attentional and patient with the bat, perhaps because they had the confidence in their bowling attack that one good 1st innings score was enough to win the game.

No it was a short walk after his test debut in his hometown (Wellington). He also carried a stump home as a momento as he got a century in that match vs the Windies (Watling was injured).

Somers Somerville can do the same thing after he takes 17 wickets to win the next match

To be fair NZ have been very disciplined with their plans for the most part and not given a great deal away in terms of easy scoring periods. We saw against Pakistan that the risk of getting belted around the park remains if you roll up and start spraying it like a firehose.

NZ just don't match up well against Australia and SA. The relative form of the teams doesn't seem to matter much when they play those two.

Re South Africa we actually played really well when they beat us 1-0 in NZ a few years ago. Jeet Raval! and Williamson batted really well and we looked set to win both the 1st and 3rd tests (lost the 2nd when Maharaj got lots of wickets) but in each the 5th days were both washed out. In South Africa their pace attack will be too good though. They need some slow Zimbabwean pitches across the border for us to compete.

NZ has never ever beaten South Africa in a test series anywhere, but at least our World Cup record vs them is amazing: won 1992; lost 96 and 99; won 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019.

They will probably controversially beat us to win the 2023 CWC now!
