I mean, considering we lost Ferguson very early in Perth, and Boult has seemed underdone in this match, apart from Santner I can’t really fault the bowlers much on this tour.

Batsmen have simply been completely outclassed. Lack of warm up games wouldn’t have helped, but they still should have given a better account of themselves than this. Could totally learn from the patience and grafting efforts from the Australian batsmen ... Latham was a step in the right direction, at least, but we need much more.

I know it’s a totally different era, but watching those 80s highlights on Sky recently, those batsmen weren’t the most skilled, but geez they battled away for their runs.

Those 85/86 highlights. The Sydney and Perth tests the ball is going through ankle height. (Perth newly relaid, for this who dont know, low bounce pitch and an outfield so slow there were 75 overs between boundaries)

Here, batsman still mentally playing on a Hamiltin pitch while physical reality is a foot higher. Totally still unprepared for the adjustment up. We all know its harder to adjust up than down.

Dont care much about 1st test ambush with no warm up , all tourists get slaughtered in first test. That's on administration a.d probably a fair enough compromise.

To play 1 day of non-FC cricket in the 11 days between first and second rest is criminal neglect, and a big **** you to NZ suckers who paid to travel to Melbourne. That's on team management and senior player leadership. Should have demanded better.

A professional team with professional pride in their performances would have put in the work and be in a position where they have adjusted by the 3rd match (and 2nd test) of the tour. These guys didn't see the need. 1 day in a high school ground deemed good enough.

Big day here for Kane and the top order (Blundell excused due to squad selection problem). They need to show they can bat as a collective test unit against good bowling - we have India coming soon so another 70 over all out will not help with confidence.

You just know next time NZ play Aus the kiwi fans are going to say stupid **** like "SmItH iS WaGnEr's BuNnY" because he hit a few catches off him batting to declare. There's no need to gift these guys wickets, just bat normally and declare when you have enough runs. There's no rush.

IIRC Smith also hit "a few catches" off Wagner in 1st innings here and in Perth when I don't think Aussie were looking to declare. Or do you think Smith planned to declare at 300 - 350 in each game, but changed his mind after returning to the dressing room and discussing with the coach?

lol really? to answer your question: absolutely.

first innings at 2-200 you're always going to play more aggressively and risk gifting wickets that you normally wouldn't, especially if you're as unselfish as Smith
second innings nearly the whole Australian innings was declaration batting, after the openers

Mostly agree with the posts regarding bowling and batting differences between the sides, though it is galling that Southee is bowling not even 130km/h here (and in the first innings). Surprised us all by getting that to work in Perth on a quicker wicket, but has reverted to the level of effectiveness we all expected (i.e. none) in Melbourne. Remember Southee could rock up to the crease off a short run and bowl this pace as an 18 year old, and he also went through a brief stage in his career two or three years in where he did the work to push up to high 130s. He lost swing and accuracy then but there's no reason with condition/coaching/intent someone with his natural bowling physique couldn't work on that so that high 130s is in his repertoire.

On the batting side, Latham provided the template first innings before again losing patience. It took wearing one and quite a lot of plays and misses, but that's the top order batsman's job.

I tend to agree, but basically you're saying here that Latham's lead should be followed because he was just really lucky. If Blundell played and missed as much as Latham instead of nicking off he might have tonned up.
