Bradman, Smith and Ponting

Hutton, Hobbs, Sutcliffe, Hammond, Barrington

Sachin, Gavaskar

Sobers, Richards and Lara

Sangakkara

Kallis

I expect at least 12-13 of the 15 names to be in Top 15 with Pollock or Headley surprising me.

Graham Gooch (England) 749

Quality Points: 671
Career Points: 78

Career/Runs: 1975-1995, 8900 (rank 14)

Overall average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 42.32 (42.58) 41.14 (41.40) 50.24 (49.24) (rank 88)
50 Innings Peak Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate (1990-1993): 60.20 59.00 52.73 (rank 34)
Non-Home Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 37.97 36.62 47.28 (rank 138)
Quality Opposition Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 41.10 40.01 49.97 (rank 94)

A late bloomer, Graham Gooch achieved his peak in his late thirties, which included 333 against India and a stunning 154* vs. the West Indies when he carried his bat at Headingly (rated as the 8th greatest test innings on my ratings). He scored 11 of his 20 centuries during his peak period. His away record lets him down slightly, but his numbers are solid enough for such a long career, which would have garnered even more runs had he not been banned for taking a trip to South Africa in 1982.

If anyone wants to do a write up of their favorite batsman, please send me a PM and I'll gladly add it to their stats when I post them. I'm thinking Burgey should do Border for a start.

Michael Hussey (Australia) 753

Quality Points: 706
Career Points: 47

Career/Runs: 2005-2013, 6235 (rank 99)

Overall average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 48.15 (51.52) 42.53 (45.51) 45.32 (50.13) (rank 45)
50 Innings Peak Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate (2005-2008): 60.94 51.19 44.83 (rank 45)
Non-Home Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 38.93 37.65 42.81 (rank 128)
Quality Opposition Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 52.19 46.97 47.32 (rank 17)

"Mr Cricket" didn't get to make his test debut until the age of 30 due to his pathway being blocked by the batting order of arguably the finest ever team in cricket history. He made up for lost time, averaging an adjusted 58.75 (64.18) in his first 31 matches. His average dropped 10 points from that point until he finished up in 2013 but he showed up against the best opposition of his time, ensuring that Australia remained one of the best teams in the world even though they weren't the totally dominant force of the early 2000s.

This is now that we start guessing all the remaining names?

Australia (8): Bradman, Chappell, Ponting, Waugh, Smith, Hayden, Harvey, Hussey
England (8): Hobbs, Hutton, Hammond, Suttcliffe, Barrington, Compton, Gooch, Cook
West Indies (7): Sobers, Richards, Lara, Headley, Weekes, Walcott, Chanderpaul
South Africa (6): Pollock, Kallis, de Villiers, Amla, Nourse, Smith
India (5): Tendulkar, Gavaskar, Dravid, Kohli, Sehwag
Pakistan (4): Miandad, Younis, Yousuf, Inzamam
Sri Lanka (2): Sangakkara, Jaywardene
New Zealand (1): Williamson
Zimbabwe (1): Flower

That's 42. Who else? Root, Warner?
Not sure about other countries but I'm expecting the following West Indians:

Lara
Sobers
Viv
Headley (?)
Chanderpaul
Weekes
Walcott
Kanhai
Lloyd(?)

Doubt Hunte or Kallicharan will make the cut. But still to potentially have 20% of the top 50 puts a smile on my very very biased face....

No.47

Sir Alastair Cook (England) 753

Quality Points: 665
Career Points: 88

Career/Runs: 2006-2018, 12472 (rank 10)

Overall average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 42.71 (45.35) 40.36 (42.86) 42.93 (46.95) (rank 102)
50 Innings Peak Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate (2010-2013): 59.77 54.99 43.41 (rank 41)
Non-Home Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 43.42 40.54 42.52 (rank 79)
Quality Opposition Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 43.16 41.55 43.18 (rank 76)

England may take a long time to find an adequate replacement for their former captain at the top of the order. Alastair Cook retired at the early age of 33, having squeezed in an incredible 161 matches in just over 12 years. If he had managed to keep the fires burning for a little longer than he was odds on to become the highest run scorer in test cricket history. His peak period coincided with England winning the Ashes down under, the only time they have managed to do so since 1986/87. Cook has solid but not spectacular numbers across all measures but it is his sheer amount of runs that gives him a place in the top 50.

If you extend it to his whole career(1978-1994), not just 1980s, Gavaskar, Gooch, Boon, Vengsarkar all averaged better than him (with a 1000 runs cutoff).

Not saying TOTAB will fall behind Gooch for instance in this exercise, but this is not the metric Border is going to come good.
Look at his overseas record, and you do have a point.
Idk about the rest, but Gavaskar is helped significantly by playing 6 test match series vs a WI second XI. Not remotely comparable to the team that beat Australia in Australia a little later featuring the likes of : croft, Garner etc.
