Whatever it takes!!!
Played perhaps the most amazing and astonishing counter attacking knock against India in India. That knock was just something else.

Clem Hill (Australia) 747

Quality Points: 706
Career Points: 41

Career/Runs: 1896-1912, 3412 (rank 123)

Overall average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 45.90 (39.21) 44.87 (38.34) 57.78 (58.64) (rank 31)
50 Innings Peak Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate (1897-1905): 55.43 53.21 57.30 (rank 54)
Non-Home Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 41.94 39.40 53.47 (rank 81)
Quality Opposition Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 44.38 44.38 55.21 (rank 51)

The one a lot of posters have been waiting for. Clem Hill finishes 30 points and 18 positions above his famous contemporary Victor Trumper. Here is the breakdown of their points across the 5 measures.

Career: Hill 41 Trumper 36 (Hill played for three more years than Trumper)
Overall: Hill 406 (45.90) Trumper 398 (45.29) (Hill has the greater RPI whilst Trumper has the higher strike-rate)
Peak: Hill 158 (55.43) Trumper 158 (55.64) (Again, RPI trumps strike-rate)
Non-Home: Hill 68 (41.94) Trumper 60 (36.18)
Quality Opposition: Hill 75 (44.38) Trumper 65 (37.64)

It's close but Hill was better than Trumper away from home and against the quality opposition of their day (England). Hill therefore takes his place as the top batsmen of those who played their entire careers before the Great War.

We have an English opening batsman up next. The first of six in the top 50.

Pietersen ranked above a bunch of players of superior reputation -- Crowe, Laxman, Greenidge etc.

I've seen some batsmen make it look ridiculously easy over the last decade. I'm taking about de Villiers seeming to bat on another wicket from the rest of the match, or Kohli looking like he could chase down 500 if he was on song, or Steve Smith being well, Steve Smith,he never seems to look troubled. But no one matches the theatre of an on-song KP. The bloke has played some of the most commanding innings I've ever see. Outrageous at times.

3. Hobbs
4. Sobers
5. Hutton
6. Hammond
7. Barrington
8. Tendulkar
9. Sangakkara

Hayden will also feature too high, alongside Sehwag around 15.

My Hill > Trumper theory finally proven correct
With Hill out of the way now, it will be interesting to see which left handed Aussie batsman would come up highest in this list. Harvey,Border and Hayden left. I am voting for Hayden.

Edit: Hussey left too. Should be below Hayden though.
