One fascinating part of this exercise is, the guess work around players who have not appeared yet. Are they going to come soon or are they not going to make top 100 ? Example, Simpson, Hill.

Half way through his career, Gilchrist would have ranked in top 20 or so. Think a relatively short career by number of years hurts him too.

Minor point but I'm surprised his 50 innings peak starts from 2000 not 1999 considering he opened his career with 81 and 149* against Pak in late '99

The only reason one could think of is, his performance at the end of that peak period in 2003 would have surpassed those.

Couple of proper swashbucklers in Gilly and Doug. Complete box office. Walters is often overlooked in discussions of great players, but a great player he certainly was. Record in England lets him down, but made a ton in a session on two occasions in his career.

After 47 matches, before the beginning of India in Australia 2003/04, Gilchrist had an overall rating of 842, good enough for 15th!
