It's a 2 match series that doesn't count to the world test championship so I don't think they were overly concerned about picking the strongest 15 squad and covering all bases. That's why Ali, Bairstow, Foakes, and even Anderson (who may have been fit if pushed) are not out there, and the likes of Mahmood, Parkinson, and Crawley are in the squad when they aren't really in the top 15 players in the country.

With Foakes I would guess it's a combination of him having a poor season, and him taking a break from the game. Last winter Foakes had intended to take the whole winter off due to fatigue but in the end toured in Sri Lanka and did well. Possibly a similar issue this winter, with England deciding it was better he had a break rather than toured around as the second wicketkeeper in the off chance that there is an injury to Buttler.
Pretty sure if Foakes had the option he’d have toured with the side. I’ve got no complaints at all with the younger more inexperienced players get a go in this series, as you say, it doesn’t count towards the Test Championship so a good chance to blood a couple. But the keeping slot is continually overlooked in terms of capable glovemen, inexperienced or otherwise. It has to stop because it will cost us.

I think the thing about not being part of the Test Championship is (or should be) completely irrelevant. We had 140 years of Test Cricket that was nothing to do with it either.

Never seen Pope keep wicket that I can remember.

Part of me hopes Buttler is unfit and we play Crawley, not seen him before so would like the chance to see if he is any good.

I feel like picking Ferguson in Australis is a given. Not wanting to buy into the non-WTC games are meaningless vibe, but they might not want to risk an injury in a 2 match series vs an England side just trounced ahead of probably the biggest Test challenge we've had since, well, the last time we toured Aus. Lockie seems like he'd give it his all rather than bowl within himself, so injuring himself in the 2nd match of a series where we'd draw at worst might not be seen as 'worth it' whereas giving Henry a gig, who might be seen as a lesser risk, is a good litmus test as to where he's at.

Also if this series and the last series in England doesn't result in 3 match series between these two sides I will send lewd drawings to NZC

If Henry takes a bag then you can't drop him and Ferguson won't get picked anyway

Aims for Henry are:
- dismiss Burns ie the left hander. Can't be a specialist new ball bowler if you can only bowl to right handers.
- maximum effort and still attack the crease once the ball gets old. Some of the domestic highlights of his bowling with the older ball are very lacklustre.

I don’t get what NZ are thinking with Lockie Ferguson, unless they genuinely think that Henry is the right pick in these conditions. As pointed out previously, Ferguson will have a small window where he can bowl gas at the highest level, they’re surely not resting him for the Australia tour, surely ? He hasn’t played a single Test yet, this would’ve been perfect preparation for him ahead of that tour.

Pretty much this. Then they'd be making the same mistakes they made last time in Australia. And debuting a bowler in Australia anyway is just ...ugh.
Tbf, I don't think one game on a classic NZ seamy road is going to be great preparation for a trip to Aus
